It gives everyone a deeper look into how sweet, funny, and animated he is on a daily basis, as he continues to use his voice as a proud self-advocate, entrepreneur, and kindness-spreading superhero who wants to let the world know that Autism isn’t a bad thing. Some may wonder why he’s wearing a shirt that says he’s “more than his Autism” while talking about Autism. The purpose of the shirt isn’t to ignore or be ashamed of Autism, but to humanize it- reminding people that behind every Autism diagnosis is a unique individual with their own interests, challenges, strengths, and dislikes. His name is Jaiden, and he’ll tell you he’s handsome any chance he gets! He loves drawing (he draws every day) and dancing, which is also one of his happy stims. He doesn’t like tags in his clothes or loud noises (balloons are a no-go). He loves being involved in our business and helping create safer, kinder, and more inclusive spaces for all kids. He approaches every interaction with a big heart, a smile, and genuine kindness, and he has an incredible ability to connect with others. It’s Day 14 of our “Autism Alphabet Challenge”! Today is letter N for “Nonverbal” and the challenge is “Sign Langauge Basics” 👍🏾 Jaiden didn’t talk until he was four, and basic sign language was helpful as a form of communication for us during that time, especially to express that he was hungry, thirsty, tired, or had to use the potty. Today, we encourage you to learn and use at least five basic sign language signs when communicating with each other throughout the day. Practice the signs multiple times to ensure everyone is comfortable using them. You can also make learning fun by incorporating games, like Sign Language Simon Says, Sign Language Bingo, Sign Language Day. This challenge not only introduces families to sign language but also fosters inclusivity, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the importance of nonverbal communication.
