Sometimes you chase a day where everything goes exactly how you didn’t expect, but it’s also way more interesting that way. This day in SW Oklahoma featured a localized outbreak of supercells with tornadoes which was absolutely not expected. I left the house thinking that if we saw a supercell for a couple of hours before it dissipated I was going to be pretty happy with the documentation we achieved. Instead, we chased 3 different cells that all produced tornadoes, including one that had one of the most intense radar signatures you could imagine. Wild stuff. Massive multivortex tornado lofting trees hundreds of feet into the air in Oklahoma! This was the starting phase of a terrifying EF-4 tornado that tracked just west of Shawnee, OK and directly impacted the small community of Bethel Acres. This initial multivortex phase already had the look for a violent tornado taking shape. We ended up moving east and documenting this tornado as it shape-shifted from this multi-vortex into a wedge into a giant stovepipe back into a wedge again. The rope out stage of a tornado is usually the final, dramatic act. As the tornado vortex weakens, it becomes long and narrow, resembling a rope dangling from the sky. This slender funnel often twists and contorts erratically. Though visually striking, rope tornadoes are *typically* less intense than their wider counterparts. The rope out usually lasts briefly before the tornado dissipates completely, signaling the twister's end. JAW DROPPING tornado filmed near Olustee, Oklahoma. This tornado was a long-track tornado which reached over 1 mile in width at times along its path, and it went through multiple phases. It was initially a large multi-vortex, then a large cone, and eventually a fat stovepipe. MONSTER tornado showing off the very important storm spotter concept that the tornado is bigger than the condensation funnel you see. In this case, there was consistent ground contact underneath a huge portion of the meso (under the laminar bowl especially). I was halfway convinced this thing was going to condense fully in seconds and become a monster visually. As a general rule of thumb, anytime I see something like this happening I try to stay under the horseshoe cut in the updraft because I have seen tornadoes that look like this grow very rapidly in size and strength in mere seconds. #weather #science #tornado #oklahoma #twister

Titan partner Erin Moe captured this wall cloud taking shape near Akron, CO earlier this week. This wall cloud was the first step in the process towards this supercell coming oh so very close to producing a tornado. Anytime you see persistent rising motion like this under the base of a supercell, you have to start looking for the other pieces of tornado formation to come together, like the RFD cut/horseshoe coming around and increasing rotation in the wall cloud. #tornado #wallcloud #weather #science #Colorado
