“But you don’t look like a doctor” is something I’ve heard countless times, as I’m sure other female physicians have as well. What exactly does a doctor look like? Over 50% of medical school applicants are women, so being female can’t be it. The average age of a medical school graduate is around 26-27, so being young can’t be it. Most physicians are no longer wearing white coats, so just wearing scrubs can’t be it… But this isn’t just from patients, it’s from colleagues as well. A recent study showed that women introduced by men at Internal Medicine Grand Rounds were less likely to be addressed by their professional title than were men introduced by men. I personally have received emails from colleagues addressed to Erica, and have had patients call me Mrs. Wigdor or ma’am; which is OK, as long as they would have done the same to a male physician (I guarantee you they wouldn’t have). Anyway, it’s time we fix this stigma. Happy National Doctors Day to ALL of the physicians out there, regardless of their gender. ♥️
