A meteor hammer is a very old but very simple Chinese weapon that consists of a metal weight (the one shown here is 1.2lb), a length of rope that can vary from 4-18ft, and a flag that both helps the user and distracts the opponent. The work demonstrated here is more for flash and flair than combative purposes, but does help to showcase the spontaneous speed and force that can be generated at a moments notice! Real combative work is significantly less flashy, and revolves around consistently controlling space as it's user lashes our at unexpected times and angles. Meteor hammers are the embodiment of the saying, "the best defense is a good offense" as they lack a lot of options that we would consider for traditional defensive work. However it's worth noting that what they lack in traditional defense they more that make up for in versatility, beating able to to some things that other tools of it's time just couldn't. That versatility comes at a cost however, as due to its unique construction and flexible nature new lerners are much more likely to harm themselves rather than anyone else for at least the first few months. While there are SOME depictions of this tool being used on a battlefield (shown as a sort of tertiary tool on horseback) and other depictions in a military tools manual from the same era (shown with a length of chain to prevent it from being cut), meteor hammers probably found much more use as concealed and improvised tools for guards, assasins, and swords for hire! Man, I remember only having access to big cat litter buckets to make ice blocks out of, and stacking them on top of tires because I didn't have a stand! I always had a dilemma between using half or fully frozen targets back then, because on one hand a fully frozen target was MUCH harder to break and really showed the power of my strikes! On the other, the half frozen targets spilled water EVERYWHERE and made such a nice sound 😍😍 Also, watching this back I can see all the spots where I could have sped up my work to make it more efficient, but I think that the slowness of my old work was also what made it so accessible to the masses. While I will always welcome discussion, if you plan to comment about how usless my work is, please read this first❤️ There are MANY reasons we don't see flexible tools like meteorhammers in the hands of the general population. The largest of which being just how long it takes to become proficient with something so unconventional, and how painful/damaging the learning mistakes can be. Given the cornucopia of simpler, easier, and more reliable (for most) options, I'm not the lest bit surprised that the claim that ANYONE could use this as an effective weapon feels absurd. The only reason someone would willingly pick this hospital trip on speed dial up in the first place is if they think they are Neo, or they have done martial arts long enough to have brain damage. That all out of the way, ignoring the sheer amount of force that this thing generates is a mistake. A 1lb metal ball moving 70+ Mph coming at you from only 11ft away is moving faster than even the fastest ever reaction time could perceive, and is generating enough force to stop a heart on impact four times over. Add on to it that this, at it's heart, is just an angry arborist weight and the possibilities for applications only stop when you run out of ideas. Since it's rope, it fits any form better than any holster I've ever seen, it's concealed quick draw (yup, you can absolutely wild west this thing out) is faster than most conventional draws because the draw IS the shot, and should the tool do it's job in incapacitating whoever it's aimed at you have a rope to tie them up with, preventing any further altercation until the proper authorities arive. Should it NOT go in the hammerists favor, they have a way to tie off an exit, tourniquet a wound, or climb to what my normal be an inaccessible space for escape. The rope can be replaced with something cut resistant, and the weight can be made out of anything you can tie a rope to. This thing is called a meteorhammer and is basically just weaponized teatherball 🤣 Made out of a 1lb steel ball attached to 11ft of rope with a flag for stabilization (amongst a few other reasons), this thing is CRAZY hard to use! The trickshot I'm performing here is more like a demonstration of skill rather than practice for any combat work, but I made sure to sneak in some practical stuff as I went (like that behind footshot)! Also, to clarify, none of the flashy stuff is needed in order to use this thing properly. It's a rock on a rope, and as such, can just be swung around until you hit your target! Since this thing can reach speeds in excess of 70mph [112kph] with practice and dedication, it can pack quite a punch!
