I love the fact she can order. She told me in the car she wanted milk, but automatically said water. There’s so many things I love about this clip… The way Tommy’s easily able to change his mind about what it is he wants, and find the right words to communicate. The clear ‘s’ sounds he makes for sweets, a sound he’s always struggled with up to now. And the pure cheekiness in trying to get an extra sweet, telling me he’s got 5 and hiding them behind his back so I can’t see them. It’s the simple things in life. Things that for a long time just weren’t possible. They’re the things that fill my heart the most ❤️ #nonverbal #nonverbalautism #autismparents #autismdad

There are a couple issues that we face using an AAC on an iPad instead of AAC on a dedicated device. One is that it has to be charged more frequently which means it isn’t always available to Gabe. The good news is that Gabe communicates beautifully in other ways. He just had a whole conversation with us using his eyes! He is so calm, cool, and collected almost all of the time because of his ability to communicate so well in spite of having apraxia. It didn’t happen overnight. I have seen a huge change in Gabe ever since he started using his AAC device years ago. The other ways he communicates came naturally to him. He is mastering the art of communicating through eye contact and body language! We are so proud of him and his ability to adjust to a world that isn’t ideal for someone like him. We are excited that he has started to learn a multimodal methods of communicating through spelling! He has so much to learn and to share with us! That is what I’m looking forward to focusing on when our trip ends next week! Currently, we are on our way to our next destination! Gabe has been asking for months to go to Montauk. He tells us on his AAC device daily! Even though we have been traveling for about a month already and need to rest, we couldn’t pass up a trip to our favorite place. After this we are really done until mid September when we bring him to NY for fashion week where he will be walking the runway! Can’t wait to share more about that soon! #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #nonverbal #nonverbalautism @Caroline Kiernan112 @nicolegottesmann

First supermarket trip of the summer holidays 🛒 We’ll probably end up going once or twice a week over the next 6 weeks, but for Tommy this is the same as going to do any other fun activity, he loves it so much. Plus the reasurance of the routine, knwong what to expect, helps him be relaxed for the rest of the day. What do you think of his haul today? 🧁❤️ #autism #nonverbalautism #autismdad #autismmom #autismmum

Mondays are Spelling Days! Gabe: “STARTING TO SEE HOW HARD IS BE ME” Today was one of the most difficult days for both myself and Gabe. I didn’t send him to school today. I knew he needed to be home based on some unusual behavior that has been going on. He is not willing to leave a certain area of the house, even to go to sleep at night. This is becoming a habit. At the beginning of Gabe’s session he chose to chat. Honestly, this is very difficult to share and I am doing so because I think I need support too. This is excruciating because I can’t do anything to make it better for him. Gabe spelled: “ANGRY” Then the most heartbreaking thing came next: “STARTING TO SEE HOW HARD IS BE ME” “SORE HEART” Caroline showed up at this point and we shared with Ingrid some of things going on at home. Mainly transitions. We asked him why he feels the need to stay in one place. We asked him if he’s feeling scared or anxious about something. Gabe spelled: “SORRY” “SCHOOL” We then talked about reasons someone might have these feelings about school, like maybe there is test coming up or something else that they are worried about. She recommended he see a therapist and we are on board. I hope he will start to feel more understood soon. I literally don’t know how much I can take on an emotional level lately. Ever since Gabe started spelling I’ve been experiencing a lot of feelings with such intensity. Im devastated, disturbed, excited, hopeful, hopeless. All at once! I’m basically crying a lot. This isn’t about me, but I need to get it together to help him. #autism #apraxia #nonspeaking #nonverbal #nonverbalautism #autismo #spelling #rpm #s2c #aac @nicolegottesmann

For some reason Tommy finds me saying his name out loud on command hilarious 😂 But it’s meant that for the last few nights we’ve had some great opportunities to work on his spoken language. We always do a very slow 5-1 countdown each night before bed (or most transitions really) and it’s great to see him trying to say the numbers too 😊 Getting him to put two syllables together, now that’s the big challenge 🤞 How many times do you think I’ve said “Tommy” over the last few days 🤪 #autism #nonverbal #nonverbalautism #autismmom #autismdad
