See if you can spot the two sharks I am concerned about…it’s not for the reason most people think I would or should be concerned about getting in with sharks… Most people probably think I mean I’m concerned with their behavior for my own safety, and that is a very crucial and relevant thing to constantly be aware of around other animals (human-animals included 😉 cause statistically they are very dangerous 😉) but in this situation, as I note additional safety considerations I am factoring in, what I am really concerned about is their wellbeing. Yes, I am worried for the sharks lives because of humans. The human impact seen from fishing gear on these two sharks is potentially life threatening. The one shark with the large oversized hook and jaw broken open from trying to struggle away from that hook and line will sadly likely die from slowly starving. This is heartbreaking as the suffering is prolonged and also has other potential negative implications as this animal becomes desperate for nourishment it may become so desperate as to go after things that are not its natural prey item. The other shark with the long trailing fishing gear could roll (as Galapagos sharks do naturally in bait balls as a hunting strategy, or during mating) and become entangled or wrapped with this line which can lead to gill or fin damage, again leading to a potential shortened lifespan and also constant and progressive suffering. I hate animal cruelty, I wish there was more I could do to help and at least for the shark with the long trailing line I attempted to dive down and cut it as short as possible as we do daily with the team and wonderful people who join and support @OneOceanDiving but sadly for the one with the large hook and broken jaw there isn’t anything we can do to fix his jaw. The hook will likely not rust out before he starves, unless he’s able to find already dead fish which is most likely found on baited hooks or closer to shore in nets, on the reef, or in fishing harbors all of which present potential additional hazards. A little throwback to my underwater version of “Woke up this way” ha ha. Join me on a dive at home on the north shore of Oahu. Freediving, stretching, and yoga can do wonders for your health and wellbeing. I like to combo the three whenever possible. Doing yoga and stretching can help to avoid injuries and also benefits my freediving by helping to expand my lung volume and improving my circulation. Try some underwater stretching or a whole yoga session the next time you’re in the water, the lack of gravity gives a whole different feel 💙 No Pin cushion sea stars were touched in the making of this, but they always make me think of pillows. “The pillows of the sea” remind me of moments where I was so sleep deprived that I’ve fallen asleep underwater on scuba twice in my life (funny stories for another time.)
