To celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility (Sunday 31st March), here’s a clip from 1967 which shows a young trans woman called Vicky showing us a day in her life. The remarkable glimpse into pre-Stonewall trans life in New York serves as a reminder that trans people have always existed and will always exist. #transgender #transgenderdayofvisibility #lgbtqhistory #transwoman #tdov #stonewall

A middle school for #LGBTQplusyouth, described as “life-saving” for its future pupils, is set to open in #Arizona. The Queer Blended Learning Center, a “micro-school” for up to a dozen students, will open its doors in #Phoenix in August. Traditional classes such as maths and reading will be taught alongside #LGBTQplushistory and social studies. The school, which will be housed at the Phoenix headquarters of LGBTQ+ youth charity, one•n•ten, currently has six students enrolled, and is looking to expand to accommodate 10 to 12 pupils, #AZCentral reported. Leaders of the school programme said it will be life-saving for queer children in the face of growing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in the US – more than 570 such bills have been introduced in America so far this year, according to the #HumanRightsCampaign. Arizona governor #KatieHobbs has refused to sign several bills in recent months, including a ban on trans people using the correct toilets. Last month, the #Democrat vowed to “veto every bill that aims to attack and harm children”. Nate Rhoton, the chief executive of one•n•ten, told AZCentral: “Nationally, LGBTQ youth are under attack legislatively… it’s deadly to the youth we serve.” He added that programmes such as the Queer Blended Learning Center are “absolutely necessary and life-saving for the young people we will reach”. Kinda Interesting Things #125: The Rise and Fall of the Everard Baths At 28 West 28th Street in Chelsea, there once stood a bathhouse that was considered a safe haven for NYC’s gay community. Built in 1888, and repurposed as a bathhouse in 1860, the Everard Baths were a sanctuary for gay men, who had been frequenting the baths as early as World War I. While it thrived in popularity in its later years, it was considered a rundown establishment that was partially destroyed by a fire in 1977, and forced to close in 1986 due to the AIDS epidemic. When I was a young kid pursuing dance, my dance company brought us to see an Alvin Ailey Dance Company show, and it changed my world. Two months ago, I had the privilege of seeing them again as their tour came through my city, and it reminded me of how important they are to American History, as well as the history of black and queer resilience. You must see them perform if you are able, and we must keep this history alive. Replying to @davidj8675 Yes, I support trans liberation! But wait... You didn't know that? Calling me CRAZY on PRIDE month?? Don't get me wrong, I find myself disagreeing with people I otherwise agree with ALL THE TIME! But when that happens, I look inward, I try to gather some context, I ask myself what experience or piece of information I might be missing to come to the same conclusion as that person I respect. I don't immediately jump to "They crazy!" and make it know publicly in their own space of education and vulnerability. I'll never understand how comfortable people are with dismissing entire bodies of work without asking themselves if they aren't the ones being inconsistent in their thinking. I have NO time for that entitlement. #lgbtqia #lgbtqhistory #sociology

I didn’t learn about Christine Jorgenson until my senior year of college, in my LGBTQ studies class. I remember feeling infuriated that I was 21-years-old and just then learning about this icon of queer, American history. LGBTQ history needs to be taught in schools, and not just in higher education. #christinejorgensen #lgbt #lgbtq #queer #gay #trans #gayhistory #lgbthistory #lgbtqhistory #queerhistory #1950s #50s #transwomen #queerwomen #fyp
