These are the type of equine language every equestrian should study and get good at recognizing. One of my goals for George is to drive him using entirely force-free training. Because the driving community is quite traditional, there’s really not much out there for alternative driving education approaches for the horse. (Heck, even bitless is heavily frowned upon & even shamed by many) The great thing about that, is that really the world is my oyster when it comes to his training. The bad thing about that is that the world is my oyster when it comes to his training🤣 There’s so many different ways you could teach driving with positive reinforcement and it really means it’s up to personal preference. Whips cues, rein cues, vocal cues, can all be taught differently. So I actually ended up deciding that for my whip cues, i’ll go a bit of a different way. I’ll simply turn it into a target, for George to move his shoulder into rather than away from. It’s easy to teach, and can in the future be transitioned to a more traditional looking cue should I choose to do so. And so to distinguish between a regular whip, and a target whip, I put a nice blue flag on it💙😁 Excited to see where this is going to take us for ground driving! When dog trainers point this out among their peers, it’s common to hear “but why aren’t you being more positive in your interactions with those trainers?” But should we be? As a dog trainer, my goal is to help the public have the best possible life with their dogs. Being tolerant, or silent, when I see trainers advising the public to use problematic methods that are known to be potentially harmful to dogs and their relationship with the people around them does the opposite of that.
