Follow the ABC’s of safe sleep as closely as possible every night and for every nap: ✔️ALONE: baby sleeps in a seperate sleep space. It’s great to room-share, but never badshare. Their crib should be absolutely empty except for pacifiers — no stuffies, pillows, blankets, bumpers, positioners, etc. Ever. ✔️BACK: it’s ok if they roll on their own, but always place babies to sleep on their back initially. The “back to sleep campaign” of 1994 resulted in >50% drop in SIDS rates. ✔️CRIB: baby sleeps in a regulated crib, bassinet, or pack-n-play. Most cases of SIDS and SUIDS occur in an adult bed, a couch/sofa, or a device not meant for sleeping like a swing, infant lounger, or bouncer. Here is a full list of risk reduction strategies and protective factors (tummy time, pacifier, human milk, etc) from The Task Force on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (2022): https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/150/1/e2022057990/188304/Sleep-Related-Infant-Deaths-Updated-2022 Following safe sleep ABCs reduces risk by 95%: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356149/ Lightning strike statistic rationale: ~3,400 babies die from SIDS/SUIDS each year in the United States (CDC). Only 5% of these occur without the presence of unsafe sleep factors — so about 170 babies who are sleeping safely die from SIDS/SUIDS each year (Trachtenberg et al, 2012). Meanwhile, about 270 people are struck by lightening in the United States each year. #pregnant #babiesoftiktok #safesleep #newborn #thirdtrimester #postpartum

Don’t pick this baby up! He is in active sleep 😴 🌙 Babies in active sleep may grunt, squirm, lift their legs, cry, or even open their eyes. 🌙 Rushing to pick up a baby in active sleep will only interrupt their rest, and yours. 🌙 Instead, wait a couple of minutes to see if they will settle on their own. 🌙 When Levi was a newborn, I’d wake up to comfort him every time he was acting like this… which was about every hour. I thought he was uncomfortable or hungry and needed my help. Instead, I was unintentionally arousing him from his active sleep state and perpetuating my own exhaustion. 🌙 When I learned of active sleep and stoped jumping out of bed for every grunt, grumble, and wiggle, we both started sleeping much better! #b#babycareb#babycaretipsn#newborni#infantt#toddlerb#babyc#cutebabyb#breastfeedingb#breastmilks#safesleepb#backtosleepf#formulafeedingp#pumpings#safesleepe#exclusivepumpingm#momlifed#dadlifef#familiesl#laboranddeliverym#montessoril#laboranddeliverynursep#pregnantp#pregnancye#evidencebasedr#raisingkidsp#postpartummaternity #fyp #newbornessentials

19 times!!! To put this into perspective, a baby with a parent who smokes cigarettes is 2.5 times more likely to die from SIDS. Why? The single greatest risk factor for sleep-related death is belly sleeping (as opposed to sleeping on their back). Belly-sleeping does become safe once the infant is able to get themselves into that position on their own, and is able to get out of it on their own. A swaddled baby’s movements are limited and if they roll onto their belly, they may not be able to get themselves out of a compromising position. ❗️It is common for babies to roll for the first time in their sleep❗️This is why swaddling needs to stop BEFORE they start rolling. After 8 weeks, this becomes more and more likely. Signs that your baby is getting close to rolling (and swaddling needs to stop, even if they’re younger than 8 weeks): - using their abdominal muscle to lift their legs up - turning over to the side - crossing one leg over the other as if in a starting position to roll There is no evidence that swaddling at any age DECREASES the ridk of SIDS. It is not necessary. You can choose to swaddle in those first weeks if you’d like, but know that it is optional. An appropriately sized sleep sack or regular pajamas are safe from day one and onward 😊 #baby #babycare #pregnant #newborn #babycaretips #safesleep

The AAP doesn’t update their safe sleep recommendations very often, so when they do, they mean business. Just because a product is manufactured and sold, doesn’t mean it’s safe for your baby. Use a regular swaddle / sleepsack and avoid “fad” baby sleep products that are supposed to make young babies sleep better/deeper/longer. Simple is usually best 🥰 #baby #newborn #pregnant #babycare #sleepsack #safesleep #safesleepawareness #newbornbaby #babysleep

Safe Sleep Aware Nursery 👶🏻 Safe sleep is so important for babies, it’s helps reduce the risks of SIDS. Some of the factors we’ve put into place ahead our first baby are - We didn’t place our cot near a window or radiator, because of fluctuations in temperature. It’s recommended to place your babies cot on an internal wall! We got a second hand crib, so I had to ensure all the bars were safe, the right distance apart, clean and no sharp edges! The @lullabytrust and @nhsengland strongly recommend using a brand new mattress for each child for so many reasons! My go to brand is always @thelittlegreensheep as they are organic, they grow with your baby, and are tried and trusted! It’s also advised to use a waterproof breathable sheet on your mattress! The @thelittlegreensheep ones are the only ones I use, breathable, soft, waterproof, not noises, and well worth the spend!! Organic bed sheets! Mine are from @thegilded_bird and they are so pretty, crazy soft and organic!! A safe cot is a clear cot, no bumpers, cushions, soft toys etc etc! A variety of swaddles, and sleepsacks! Ensure the tog and the size is appropriate for your baby! They are all varied so it’s important to be aware! A room thermometer, this helps me see the room is within the “safe” zone for babies sleep, and helps me judge the best sleeping bag/swaddle for the baby too! A noise machine! White is the most popular, but babies are most responsive to “pink” noise, which is what they hear in the womb! I also chose this from @tommeetippeeuk as it’s a red light which doesn’t stimulate babies during the nights as much as white or blue lights! A monitor of your choice! We chose the @owletcareuk which we got from @naturalbabyshower I love that I can track sleep cycles using the sock to help learn my babies sleep patterns and build on sleep training from a younger age! Its also encouraged for your baby to sleep “feet to foot” of the cot! For more information and help on safe sleep, please visit the @lullabytrust and @nhsengland websites! There are more factors to be aware of, but these are some of the more obvious ones, and I’d like to spread the word! #safesleep

there is so much emphasis on "Back to Sleep", but do you know the WHY behind the importance of laying your little one down on their back? it can be easy to assume that a baby should be on their stomach in case they spit-up, but the opposite is actually true. it is protective to lay your little one down on their back to sleep. i wanted to give a clearer picture of this, so please watch this video of back vs stomach sleeping. 🎥 @cribsforkids #safesleep #safesleepawareness #backisbest #newmom #newmomtips #4thtrimester #newbaby #newborn #newbornbaby #theollieworld #theollieswaddle #ollieswaddle #ollieworld #momtobe #pregnancy #pregnant #firstimemom #sleep #mom #baby #motherhood #momlife

“This is what bedtime looks like after several weeks of laying a foundation with strong sleep associations. Baby is seven weeks old and combo fed. ♡ No crying, always responsive care. “ @Elise | Bayside Babies 👶 Swaddling is a positive sleep association and with consistency and repetition, your Ollie can become a cue for your little one that it is time for sleep and soothing. ⠀ ⠀ When there is a lack of routine, your little one can be uncertain about what is coming next and uncertain about how to respond. So, creating that consistent repetitive routine can bring comfort to your little one. ⠀ ⠀ When swaddling with your Ollie becomes part of your consistent routine, it helps your little one to know what to expect and to understand the cue that it is time for sleep. #olliemagic #theollieworld #ollieswaddle #howtoswaddle #sleepfoundations #safesleep #newbornsleeptips #newbornessentials #momlife #momtok #newborn #newbornsleep #newparents

5 ways to help reduce the risk of SIDS ⚠️ While SIDS cannot be completely prevented, you can reduce the risks of it occurring considerably by following the Lullaby Trust safer sleep advice: • Sleep your baby on their back for all sleeps - day and night - as this can reduce the risk of SIDS by six times compared to sleeping them on their front. • Share a room with your baby for the first six months - this can halve the risk of SIDS. The safest place for a baby to sleep is in their own clear, flat, separate sleep space, such as a cot or Moses basket in the same room as you. • Keep your baby smoke-free during pregnancy and after birth - this is one of the most protective things you can do for your baby. • Never sleep on a sofa or armchair with your baby as this can increase the risk of SIDS by 50 times. • Do not co-sleep with your baby if you or anyone in the bed have drunk any alcohol, smoke, been taking drugs or medication that make you drowsy; these factors can put babies at an extremely high risk of SIDS when co-sleeping.
