Container Planting Fall Carrots! If you don't have enough space cleared up in your garden for fall yet consider starting some things in larger containers! Seeds are from @Botanical Interests and @SouthernExposureSeedExchange 2 of my favorite seed companies! .. My friend got me this patio picker on clearance from Lowes and I wanted to double up on my carrot planting for the fall so I figured why not? After growing carrots successfully in Texas for a few years now here are my 4 main tips! 1. Carrots need FULL SUN in the earlier stages of root development. Yes, that means the Texas sun. Which leads me to my next tip. 2. Have a watering plan in place! Carrots seeds cannot dry out or germination is greatly impacted. So use a wooden board, cardboard, even a sheet or straw mulch that you can confidently keep damp for a couple weeks to help those seeds along. But once they germinate make sure to keep watering consistently in the late summer to avoid bitter woody carrots. 3. To thin or not to thin? Well, I've done both and I've gotten pretty carrots when I thin but realistically you either spend money on carrot seed tape or time on making your own or time on meticulously sowing seeds or time thinning. Pick one. Or toss the whole packet in. It's your garden! You can thin them as very young sprouts or as teenagers for a little small treat that can be pickled or in our case will go to our guinea pigs. Regardless you'll still get some decent carrots. 4. Fluffy, loose well draining soil is best. You don't have to add sand and you don't have to use potting mix, but if you can't easily push your hand into your soil you risk funky shaped and less productive carrots. Here is an update on the progress of the potatoes I planted in grow bags back in March. It is now the end of May, and my potato plants have died back earlier than expected due to the early arrival of very hot weather. I was expecting them to die back in June, not right now. This would have given them another full month of growth, which would have resulted in a bigger harvest. Anyways, let me show you how easy it is to harvest potatoes out of grow bags. Next, I will be planting sweet potatoes and yacon (earth apple) in these bags.
