“But he knows you” as if that means he wouldn’t still bite 😂. Yes, he knows me well, I’ve worked with him 17 years, he knows I’m not a threat so he doesn’t have to be defensive, and he knows my training and that he gets treats, BUT that doesn’t make it “safe” or get rid of his predatory instincts. I’ve explained many times, they’re alligators, not Labradors, they are NEVER pets and should never be thought of as anything close to one. They’re trained, not tame. Alligator brains are wired completely different from any mammal, never expect a gator to act like like any mammal. My best example of this is at one park I worked at there was male and female together, mated up and everything, together since the 90s. Male much larger and could easily kill her if he wanted to of course, never harmed her. Then one day while I was there she had a seizure, and the moment she flipped over he was eating her, like within seconds. Gator bellowing! The first clip is Casper bellowing a few years ago, and the last clip is him bellowing just this morning during my tours! 🐊😤🐊 So impressive to hear in person, but even more impressive to FEEL the vibrations, because this close I can feel it move through my whole body! They even used gator bellow sounds in the T-Rex roar in Jurassic park! Alligators bellow to convey health and size information to surrounding gators for breeding, social, and territorial reasons. They bellow year round but with much more frequency in the breeding season. The sound emitted directly correlates to the gator’s size, providing an accurate size estimate to whoever is listening(and knows what to listen for!)When male alligators bellow, the powerful low frequency sound waves actually cause the water over their backs to bounce up, creating a “water dance” as you can see here. ~~~You can come swim with me and Casper! We talk a lot about gators being able to regrow their teeth and cycling through several thousand in a lifetime, but they can also lose this ability if the root of the tooth is damaged! Trying to drill some of these points again after comments on my recent posts 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 some people have zero survival instincts apparently 😂. A lot of people also don’t understand the control/chaos aspect where of things go wrong they can go horrifically deadly wrong. Spalshin’ and snappin’! Casper reacting to splashes at the surface. When he is underwater he often puts his nictitating membrane up, which limits his vision, and he reacts much more to movement and sound. He will snap at anything that moves underwater like this, making him much more dangerous when submerged. Most his snaps are really sweeps, slower moving and feeling for something, but sometimes he will be quick! Is Casper my pet? NOPE! Gators are not pets, they’re not a domesticated animal, and should never be thought of as pets. Sadly some states still allow the sale of baby gators as pets; most these animals don’t survive their first few years, and those that do usually develop horrible disfigurements from metabolic bone disease. Casper being a messy eater! And some quick hands! They want easy food, this fear of them chasing someone across a football field is literally impossible. They focus much more on east to catch prey in the water and specialize as aquatic ambush predators, NOT terrestrial pursuit predators. Adult humans are also outside their normal menu! With over a million gators in Florida, if they actually wanted to eat people, we would have people being killed every day! The gators are much more interested in fish and turtles than humans. There are many differences between crocs and gators, but some basics- gators have a more round broad snout, crocs more narrow, gators are usually in fresh water and crocs in salt/brackish BUT you can find either anywhere, I’ve seen crocs in full fresh and gators in hyper saline or ocean. Some Crocs can drink saltwater and excrete it, gators can’t but they do go in the ocean like people do, just to visit but not stay. Gators are usually darker, crocs lighter, gators usually have only top row of teeth exposed and crocs have both showing. And the big one, which is more aggressive??? Depends on the species!! There are MANY species throughout the world, all different. Nile crocs in Africa eat 300 people a year, but African dwarf crocs don’t hurt anyone. But comparing the American gator and American croc, neither can be considered aggressive, but the crocs are far more shy and reclusive than the gators. Due to this and their lower numbers, crocs are without a doubt less dangerous to people in Florida, in fact there has NEVER been a fatality from a croc in Florida, meanwhile there have been a few fatalities from gators this year alone. As someone who has swam with both in the wild, the crocs are far more scared of people. This doesn’t mean “safe” obviously, stay away from both, but the crocs in Florida definitely don’t deserve the reputation of Nile or saltwater crocs, both of which I’ve also worked with. ~~~You can come swim with me and Casper! Probably close to none sadly. My big gator rules I with everyone who came to Florida knew— never feed a wild gator, keep kids and pets away from the water, and never swim in gator habitat!! What’s gator habitat? Any body of water in Florida that isn’t a designated swimming area. We’ve caught 9ft gators out of literal puddles and ditches not even knee deep, they don’t live in these but if they’re on the move they might hang out for a few days in one! Always be gator aware! They’re NOT aggressive, we have over a million gators in the state of Florida, if they really wanted to eat humans there would be people killed every day, they almost always avoid humans but accidents do happen and they’re often entirely avoidable! So be smart out there, it’ll save human and gator lives! Do gators have tongues? Yes they do! They can’t stick it out like a human, it’s attached the whole way, but they do have muscular tongues that allow them to manipulate food in the mouth, as Casper is doing here to separate sand from food! Gator wrestling??? it can really have different means depending on who you’re talking to, an analogy I uses it is similar to martial arts in the idea that you could say you’re a fighter, but there’s a big difference between doing Greco Roman wrestling or kung fu, and there are different styles of gator wrestling. Unfortunately, some people are unethical in the way that they handle, so I don’t really like using the term often because it sometimes gives people the wrong idea.
