Breaking New Ground in Fusion: Lawrence Livermore’s Historic Leap In a quiet corner of California, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have quietly etched their names into the history books. Their achievement? A breakthrough in fusion energy that’s been a dream for over six decades. For the first time, they’ve produced more energy from fusion than what was initially put in. It’s not just about numbers and records; it’s about the relentless pursuit of a cleaner and safer world. Imagine a power source like the sun, right here on Earth. That’s what fusion is all about. The recent success at the National Ignition Facility isn’t just a scientific curiosity; it’s a stepping stone towards an energy source that’s clean and abundant. This progress doesn’t just resonate in labs and academic papers; it echoes in the potential for a future where our reliance on fossil fuels diminishes. This isn’t a sales pitch for a futuristic dream. It’s a real, tangible step forward, achieved by a dedicated team whose work could redefine how we power our lives. It’s a journey that’s far from over, with many challenges ahead, but the path to a sustainable energy future just got a little clearer. #FusionEnergy #LawrenceLivermore #CleanEnergy #ScienceNews #SustainableFuture #Innovation #EnvironmentalScience #RenewableEnergy #EnergyBreakthrough #ClimateHope #GreenTechnology #EcoInnovation #ZeroEmissions #FutureIsBright #TechProgress #EcoFuture #CleanTechDevelopment #SustainableScience #ClimateSolutions #EcoAwareness #RenewableTech #EnergyTransition #TechNews #EnvironmentallyFriendly #CleanEnergyGoals #ClimateAction #TechForGood

A study recently published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters suggests that boiling water then filtering it can remove up to 90% of microplastics – but there is a caveat. The harder the water, the more microplastics can be removed, so if you have soft water, this method removes more like 25% of microplastics. This microplastics removal method works by trapping the plastic particles in calcium carbonate as it solidifies when it is exposed to high temperatures, and then the calcium carbonate-covered microplastics are removed from the water when it is strained through a filter as simple as one used for coffee. Further research is needed to figure out how this microplastics removal method can be deployed at scale and how to improve the removal rate in soft water, but for now you can absolutely boil then filter your own water if you so choose. #ClimateCrisis #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #Microplastics #MicroplasticRemoval #DrinkingWater

These grandparents in Mexico helped save their community from being destroyed by a hurricane, and it’s all thanks to mangrove trees. David and Ana María Borbón got into mangrove restoration after seeing the impacts that climate change, overfishing, and mangrove deforestation had on their tiny fishing village in Baja California. Now they lead a multi-generational team of over 20 people who have planted and cared for over 1.2 million mangrove trees around. David and Ana María’s work has been so important for the area that when a hurricane made landfall near El Delgadito in 2022, researchers determined that the community would’ve been destroyed if it weren’t for all the mangrove trees surrounding it. Only time will tell if David and Ana María’s work will restore the local fishery, but either way they’ve made a profound positive impact on their environment. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #Mangroves #MangroveForest #MangroveRestoration #NatureBasedSolutions #NatureSolutions

I’ve been talking about the need to produce steel without fossil fuels for years because of how it’s used in almost every industry, and now I’m back with some exciting updates! SSAB, the Swedish startup behind the world’s first steel produced without fossil fuels, has been busy testing their product through a series of pilot projects, and they have been so successful that SSAB’s fossil free steel is expected to hit the market in 2026. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #ClimateOptimism #FossilFreeSteel

⚠️ IT’S NOT TOO LATE ⚠️ But that doesn’t mean things aren’t dire either. @Kim Steele The largest emitting countries and corporations must start to take drastic action by 2030 if we want to limit warming to 1.5°C or even 2°C, and that will only be possible if they commit to phasing out fossil fuels. That phase out won’t happen overnight, however, it is necessary to start it now because fossil fuels are the main contributor to the climate crisis. Taking action on climate can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re just getting started, so here are three ways you can help: -Committing to vote for pro-climate candidates in all elections moving forward -Participating in the upcoming @Fridays for Future NYC Global Strike For Climate Justice on April 19th -Endorsing the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Link in bio to do all that and check out the accounts below to be more engaged in climate activism – because it’s not too late: @elise joshi, @✨Wawa Gatheru✨, @Sam Bentley, @Action4Climate, @Sunrise Movement, @Greenpeace #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #ClimateDoom #EcoAnxiety #FossilFuelTreaty #FridaysForFuture #ClimateJusticeNow

4/17 🌍 Good Climate News I’ve partnered with @Conservation Int to show you all that conserving nature is not only possible, but actively happening on every continent. So check out Conservation International, and let me know in the comments how climate optimism helps you! 🌳 Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest has decreased 50% over the past year, making it the fourth year in a row the largest tropical rainforest in the world has seen a reduction in deforestation. 🪸 A new study published by researchers in Indonesia and England has shown that restored coral reefs can grow at the same rate as healthy ones in as little as four years. 🐢 Over 100 critically endangered baby hawksbill turtles were released in Timor-Leste in an effort to restore both their populations and coral reefs since hawksbill turtles play a vital role in maintaining reef ecosystems. 🧑🌾 Recent research has shown that agro-ecological solutions are better than pesticides at fighting the fall armyworm which has infested crops across Africa. Replying to @StellaronHuntsman So about that era of global boiling.. Statements like the one made by UN Secretary General António Guterres aren't meant to make you believe it's too late. They are instead meant to get our world leaders, corporations, and even ordinary people to stand up and take action. As the climate crisis rolls on, you will be seeing more rhetoric like this because things are dire. Don't let it convince you things are hopeless, though, because they aren't. Instead look at scientists, activists, frontline communities -- and in particular, indigenous communities. Are we giving up? Absolutely not. We're just fighting harder for a better future. I understand knowing where to begin with activism can feel overwhelming, so my task for you is to contact your local government and ask them if they've adopted a climate action plan. If they have, ask how you can get involved. If they haven't, open a dialogue with your community about adopting one. Climate action and justice is possible, and I firmly believe a grassroots approach with get us there if enough people stand up. #EraOfGlobalBoiling #GlobalBoiling #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #ClimateSolutions #ClimateActivism

Did you know that wooden wood turbines exist? The Swedish startup Modvion is building modular wind turbines out of laminated veneer lumber in order to reduce the environmental impact of the wind industry and open up more areas for wind farms. The first of their turbines is now generating enough electricity to power 400 homes after being constructed at their factory and then assembled on site, and Modvion hopes to build 99 more of them by 2027. This is not a paid partnership by the way; I read about their work last year and have been following their progress closely since then. When I heard the news that construction on their first turbine was complete I knew I had to make a video about it! #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #WindEnergy #WindTurbine #WindFarm #Modvion

There’s no greenwashing here.. The Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund is helping residents in Juneau trade their oil heaters in for electric heat pumps in an effort to reduce emissions and heating costs. Tourists pay a small fee into the fund whenever booking excursions to visit some of Juneau’s stunning natural wonders, and soon cruise ships and airlines might have to do the same in order to grow the fund. So far 41 heat pumps have been installed thanks to this program, and it’s having a positive impact on the local community – which is what carbon offsetting programs should be doing everywhere. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #GreenFee #CarbonOffsets

How do we make electric vehicle batteries more sustainable moving forward? Because it’s not just personal vehicles that use them – buses, trucks, and even some trains use them too. Here are eight of the most viable alternatives to the lithium-ion batteries used in most electric vehicles: ➡️ Graphene batteries ➡️ Aqueous magnesium batteries ➡️ Hydrogen fuel cells ➡️ Solid-state batteries ➡️ Sodium-ion batteries ➡️ Lithium-sulfur batteries ➡️ Recycled lithium-ion batteries ➡️ Cobalt-free lithium-ion batteries This is by no means a comprehensive analysis of electric vehicle batteries, but it’s important to understand that alternatives to lithium-ion batteries exist and we’re going to see many of them be deployed at scale over the next few years. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #ClimateSolutions #ElectricVehicles #EVs #LithiumIon #EVBattery @Alaina Wood @Alaina Wood

Several species of mushroom, bacteria, and worm have the ability to fully break plastic down, and researchers around the world are actively working on deploying these critters into landfills and other places filled with plastic waste in the near future. We need to have a talk.. If the scientists begind the studies you cite in your climate doom videos aren't saying it's too late, maybe don't make it seem like it is. Here are 3 calls to action you can do today instead of giving in to your (very normal & valid) eco-anxiety: 1. Endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty 2. Demand that President Biden delcare a climate emergency 3. Support this weekend's March to End Fossil Fuels Link in bio to learn more & take action. ⚠️ BREAKING (good) NEWS ⚠️ The Biden Administration announced last week they are pausing approvals of all proposed LNG export facilities while the environmental impacts of these projects can be re-evaluated, and this is a direct response to our activism against the CP2 Project in Louisiana. Although the fight to stop LNG (and all other fossil fuels) is far from over, it’s important we celebrate wins when we get them, so please congratulate yourselves for a job well done – and get ready to step up the fight against fossil fuels. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #ClimateSolutions #CP2 #StopLNG #EndTheEra

Embracing eco-conscious plant parenting is one step toward a greener future! Whether it’s changing how we tend to our plants, adapting how we produce and consume energy and food, or reimagining transportation and building practices, every step counts toward a healthier Earth. While our individual efforts in tackling climate change can feel like drops in the ocean, collectively, they contribute to a powerful wave of learning and change. As a plant enthusiast, it’s deeply rewarding to be able to use my platform to work toward a healthier planet. At Aspen Ideas: Climate (@aspenideasclimate), world-renowned experts, innovators, leaders, and the general public come together to forge solutions for climate change. If you’re in Miami Beach, don’t miss this annual, multi-day event from March 11–13, 2024, which promises important conversations, plus tours of local Miami environment and historic points of interest. What are some small steps you take to nurture our planet’s health? #plantparent #plantdad #climatechange #aspenideasclimate #climatesolutions #ad

TLDR; It’s not too late. That doesn’t mean exceeding the 1.5C threshold for twelve consecutive months or a new study showing that a system of ocean currents in the Atlantic is likely in the early stages of collapse are good, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to take action on climate either. Every fraction of a degree of warming we can prevent equals less catastrophic impacts on people, plants, and animals, and we have the solutions to do just that. This news should be a wake up call – and not one to give up. We need more people, not less, to stand up and demand change. I understand this news is scary and sometimes it feels like our world leaders aren’t listening to us, but please remember that we are seeing the most climate action and justice ever right now thanks to people who did not give up in the face of adversity. 13 million acres in the NPR-A will be protected too👏 So yesterday the Biden Administration announced they are canceling 7 Trump-era oil drilling leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and are prohibiting fossil fuel development in 13 million acres of the National Petroleum Reserve Alaska (NPR-A). These announcements do unfortunately exclude the Willow Project, but some more good news is that ConocoPhillips said it is highly likely they will outright cancel the project if they lose an ongoing federal court case about it. Moral of the story: Activism does work. #Alaska #ANWR #ProtectTheArctic #WillowProject #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #GoodClimateNews

Imagine if we could replace the plastic packaging we see in shops and that’s delivered to our homes, with a sustainable, compostable alternative? Couple Julia Marsh and Matt Mayes founded @Sway to try and do just that, using seaweed. “Plastic comes from petroleum, so everyday when you open up your snack wrapper or you receive your Amazon order, it’s coming packaged in plastic which comes from fossil fuels,” says Marsh. Using lots of different types of farmed seaweed, Sway have created a plastic pellet which is designed to fit into current manufacturing systems where plastic is used. They have also developed a clear plastic film which can be used to replace very common parts of packaging that are the least likely to be recycled. “It’s not hard for brands to switch to our material because it works in the systems they already use,” says Marsh. Marsh, who is a designer by trade, says she spent years designing packaging and making “beautiful trash”, something which didn’t match up with her love of the ocean. She looked at many of the existing plastic alternatives, and saw shortcomings which hindered them from working in the mainstream. “I think replacements for plastic should go even further, I think they should do good,” she says. Here, Marsh explains exactly how they make seaweed plastic, how this plastic replacement can benefit the oceans and environment, and if you can eat it. #sustainablity #plastic #pollution #climatesolutions #climatecrisis

(And please listen to scientists, activists, and indigenous leaders about whether or not it's too late) #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming #ClimateDoom #EcoAnxiety #EcoTok #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #EndTheEra #ClimateEmergency

Who's with me?? #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #ClimateActivism #FlowersAreBlooming

EV Battery ♻️ Breakthrough We can now recover 100% of aluminum, 98% of lithium, and significantly more cobalt, nickel, and manganese out of lithium-ion EV batteries thanks to a new recycling method developed by the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. This process is cheaper, more efficient, and uses less harmful chemicals compared to traditional battery recycling methods. The world only has so much of the critical minerals needed for these batteries. Plus the way we mine said minerals is typically detrimental to both human health and the environment – meaning this new recycling method can help reduce the amount of new minerals that will need to be mined. #ElectricVehicles #ElectricVehicle #EVs #LithiumIon #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #ClimateSolutions

Global heating has pushed the world’s coral reefs to a fourth planet-wide mass bleaching event that is on track to be the most extensive on record, US government scientists have confirmed. Some 54% of ocean waters containing coral reefs have experienced heat stress high enough to cause bleaching, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Watch said. Coral reefs are rich in biodiversity and provide habitat to a quarter of all marine species while covering less than 1% of ocean area. Reefs provide food and tourism income to millions of people and protect coastlines, but are considered to be one of the most vulnerable ecosystems to global heating. Scientists are trying to save the world’s coral and a recent study found that underwater speakers that broadcast the hustle and bustle of thriving coral could bring life back to more damaged and degraded reefs that are in danger of becoming ocean graveyards. @Neelam Tailor explains how this works. #coral #coralreefs #globalheating #climatecrisis #climatesolutions

We can protect nature by erasing debt 💸 Debt for nature swaps occur when financial institutions and more developed countries refinance less developed country’s loans at lower rates and then use the money saved to invest it directly into conservation and climate resiliency projects there. These swaps are helping fill in the gaps with climate finance because less developed countries are going to need at least $2 trillion a year moving forward for climate projects, and more developed countries are paying into funds to do that like they should. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #DebtForNaure #DebtForNatureSwaps #ClimateFinance #ClimateJustice #ClimateSolutions

Where does expired food go? Mostly to landfills where it produces the highly potent greenhouse methane as it decomposes. Composting would reduce the amount of groceries that end up in landfills, but about avoiding waste in the first place? A concept known as dynamic pricing could reduce food waste by 21%. It involves reducing the cost of groceries when they get close to their expiration date, yet less than 25% of grocery stores in the United States use it. Do any stores in your area use dynamic pricing? Some in mine do, and it helps me keep my grocery bill lower since I’m buying food near its expiration date and eating it quickly. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #FoodWaste

Things 👏 Aren't 👏 Hopeless 👏 With nonstop news about climate disasters and not being on track to reach climate goals, I understand that things can feel hopeless (I've been quite anxious myself recently). But it's important to understand that the fight is not over. There is still so much we can do to address the climate crisis, and that won't happen if we all give up. #GoodClimateNews serves a reminder that we have the solutions, and we are seeing progress on implementing them. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #ClimateOptimism

The climate movement has a misinformation problem, and although climate denial and climate doom are still major concerns – I’m talking about climate solutions. There’s a lot of misinformation gaining traction online about how climate solutions either aren’t effective or have too many issues associated with them and therefore shouldn’t be implemented, and this is becoming a huge issue because people are refusing to listen to experts when they bring up peer reviewed evidence refuting these claims or show them that there are solutions to these issues. So please be mindful of your criticism about climate solutions. Don’t stop being critical, but don’t ignore experts when they address your concerns either. Remember that perfection is the enemy of progress, and at the end of the day we must take drastic action now to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #ClimateSolutions #ClimateActivism

🚨 GOOD NEWS: “An MIT team is now hoping to fortify coastlines with ‘architected’ reefs — sustainable, offshore structures engineered to mimic the wave-buffering effects of natural reefs while also providing pockets for fish and other marine life. The team has also looked into making the structures more porous, and friendly to fish. They found that, rather than making each structure from a solid slab of plastic, they could use a more affordable and sustainable type of cement. Going forward, the team hopes to work with beach towns in Massachusetts to test the structures on a pilot scale.” ✍️ Jennifer Chu | MIT News Office DM us for article 🔗 #artificialreef #marinelife #protectoceanlife #coralreef #goodclimatenews #climatechange #climatesolutions
