There's no such thing as "perfect"... Depending on your goals there are constraints we can put on movements and certain points of performance that we aim to achieve, but there is no such thing as a universally "perfect" squat. Using other tools and variations is fine, but there’s absolutely nothing inherently dangerous putting a bar on someone's back and having them squat above parallel. Ideally individuals will train through the majority of their available range of motion in a wide variety of movement patterns, but they don't have to train through the full range of motion right away. While an empty bar may not be an appropriate starting point for some people depending on their current fitness level, it's a perfectly fine starting point for most. • • #squat #squatting #fitnesstips #legday

Is a knee cave bad in a deep squat? As always, there is an "it depends," but it may help you to look at any of the heaviest lifters out there and watch them squat their 100% or 105% max and to pay attention their knees. They will probably have a valgus collapse. When squatting below parallel at maximal loads, you will likely see a knee cave whether you are a new lifter or an Olympic athlete. If you have pain in the knees and the knees caving inward hurts them, then it's probably best to avoid that position for now, but that doesn't mean it's always a bad thing. When you have knee pain, even basic things like walking and stairs can be painful - does that mean it is dangerous? No. What often makes the knee cave worse is thinking about actively driving the knees outward in a squat. If your knees are driven outward, they have more range of motion to collapse inward, then, if you focus on driving out on the way up, they will fly outward again. The result is this exaggerated lateral movement. I used to teach people to drive their knees out in a squat, but this can decrease power output. It's best to just let them stay in line with the direction of your foot. Keep playing with your squat stance. I used to squat wide and, as a result, my knee cave was much greater. With a more narrow stance, I am not only more powerful when squatting, I also have less of a knee cave. The same goes for many other deep squatters. So, if you don't have pain, don't be afraid of it. Play with NOT driving your knees outward all the time and trying narrowing your stance if mobility allows (a heel lift can help). Lastly, your squat will be unique to you - don't try to make it look like anyone else's - everyone's anatomy is different! #kneepain #squat #squatting #personaltrainer #personaltraining #physio #physicaltherapy #fyp

Part 1 talked about the importance of training outside of the "traditional squat technique" to improve the mobility of your joints. However, when it comes to picking a squat, the ultimate question is, "What is your goal?" If you want to lift heavy weights, then a traditional squat is preferable as it is likely more efficient with the feet directly below the hips and weight evenly distributed side to side. If your goal is to improve the mobility of your hip, ankle, and knee, then choose a squat that does just that while starting without weight and gradually increasing the weight over many months. If your goal is to lift the heaviest weight possible while your leg looks broken, do one of the weird mobility exercises in this video, but again, do it slowly and gradually. I train both ways. I will squat heavy each week with a traditional stance but also do some funky moves as I fina them to be fun and make my joints feel really good and much stronger. Lastly, don't compare your mobility to mine or anyone else's, move within ranges that feel good and are non-painful. After two 7 On Your Side Investigations into squatting went viral, there has been a growing push from city and state lawmakers to change the law. In New York, squatters have rights after 30 days. It's written in the law that squatters have to be taken to court, making it difficult for police to have the authority to remove them. Since Eyewitness News first aired the story of Adele Andalaroo last week, the charge of unlawful eviction against her has been dropped. Our cameras were rolling when she was arrested for changing the locks on her front door to prevent squatters from getting inside. One of the men living inside the home she inherited claimed to have a lease but didn't show proof. "When they put those handcuffs on her, it was like someone punched me in the stomach," said Ann Korchak with the group Small Property Owners of New York. "This is an injustice," she said. "The only thing they can do is hire an attorney and start the process," said Korchak. That's what the Landa family had to do. They bought a $2 million dollar home in Douglaston, Queens in October and haven't been able to move in. The caretaker of the former homeowner refuses to leave. An attorney for the former caretaker said he didn't want to comment on the case. More than six months later, they're still in court. "So our hands are tied," said Susana Landa. "Our hands are tied with the law." Eyewitness News has received dozens of messages from homeowners who say they're in a similar situation. One viewer said they've had a squatter since 2019, another said it took them 25 months to get squatters out of their home. "I mean millions and millions of people have looked at your video and look at this and say how can this be happening, it's upside down," said Korchak. Our 7 On Your Side Investigation sparked a New York City Councilmember to hold a rally, calling for change to local and state laws. "You think we're at a bad place now, it can and will get worse," said NYC Councilwoman Vickie Paladino at a rally in Bayside, Queens this week. "All it takes is for an illegal squatter to say I have been here for 30 days and you know what, he has no proof." State law is set up in a way where it's difficult for police to intervene. Homeowners have to take squatters to court, which can take years for a resolution. Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz filed a bill that would change that. It has gained support since our investigation first aired. "It will make it so that someone who's trespassing, someone who is simply on the property as a squatter, will not be listed as a tenant with the law," said Blumencranz. "They'd be simply a trespasser and law enforcement can do their job and remove a trespasser but they can't remove a tenant." It's not just a problem in New York but nationwide. Lawmakers in Florida passed a similar new law this month. "I wouldn't have known about it if I wouldn't have seen articles like yours and news releases like yours," said Senator Keith Perry. "This shouldn't be a civil matter, these are criminal matters and we're taking that into account." In New York, lawmakers tried to change the law a decade ago and failed. #nyc #squatting #news
