Have you ever painted on copper?!! ✨🟧✨ Thx @Artefex Art for the panels!! I’m still new to painting on copper so I’d love to hear any tips & advice you have about the surface! ✍️ Copper panels seem to be growing in popularity (at least on my Insta feed) but they have actually been used since the renaissance. It’s a very stable painting surface as it doesn’t warp. These days aluminum & copper composite panels (ACM & CCM) like this one provide even more stability & longevity. I’m thinking of ways to incorporate the metal into my paintings & allowing it to show through. You may also like to know it comes ready to paint on. What I’ve learned lately is that copper takes a little bit of extra care. It can oxidize over time & avoiding finger contact with the copper surface is essential to prevent oil and moisture transfer, which can interfere with paint adhesion and lead to corrosion. To prepare a copper panel for painting, follow these steps: 1. Always use gloves or clean dry hands to touch the surface. 2. Remove oils, dirt, and contaminants using rubbing alcohol or a copper cleaner. 3. Keep the panel in its bag until it’s in use. 4. Finish by varnishing the full surface (including the back if it’s also copper) to prevent oxidation. Here’s how to clean finger marks & smudges from your panel: 1. Get a soft, lint-free cloth or a cotton swab 2. Use isopropyl alcohol in a diluted form, 70% or lower. 3. Apply the alcohol sparingly and gently to the area. 4. Dry the copper surface to prevent any moisture from causing tarnishing or corrosion. 5. If corrosion is still evident & alcohol didn’t remove oxidization use copper stain remover by Rublev using a lint free microfibre cloth. Then use alcohol to clean off the entire surface. Finally use Rublev copper rinse to stop any further corrosion. #dorisrose #gift #artefex #PaintingOnCopper #CopperArt #OilPaintingTips #ArtInstruction #ArtTutorial #CopperPanel #ArtSurface #ArtTips #CopperSurfacePreparation #OilPaintingOnMetal #CopperPanelArt #ArtistsOnTikTok #PaintingTechniques #ArtistsTips #CopperArtTips #CopperSurfaceCare #OilPaintingBestPractices #CopperPanelTechniques #OilPaintingTipsAndTricks #CopperPanelPreparation #OilPaintingAdvice #CopperPaintingTutorial #TikTokArtTutorial

What’s on your palette rn? 🌈 I switched to a grey palette after art school & it makes a big difference to being able to correctly judge the paint colours before you put them on your painting. White palettes are much brighter, create shadows & reflect light, distorting the colours you mix. Grey palettes are more similar to the mid-tone of most paintings meaning you are able to correctly judge values before transferring them to the work itself! You can buy grey/toned disposable palettes at most art stores. I currently use the Posh Palette from Amazon (linkinbio) which comes in grey but I previously used a glass chopping board you can find at most hardware/kitchen stores. A glass palette can be made grey by covering the underside with paint or paper. Wood palettes are naturally toned brown. Artists tone their canvases (add a thin wash of colour to their painting before starting) or use toned grey/brown sketchbooks for the same reason. The bright white of canvases/paper is so bright. If you think about it you almost never see the highest/lightest value in the natural world so why make life harder by working on white surfaces all the time. I’ve been away from the studio & away from wifi for a little while so I thought I’d share a repost of this older video. I’ll be back to it next week! #dorisrose #dorisroseart #dorisrosetips #paintingtips #paintpalette #artinstruction #artadvice #arttok #artistsontiktok #oilpainter #oilpainting #oilpaintinghacks #oilpaintingtips #oilpaintingforbeginners #oilpaintingtutorial #howtopaint #paintingforbeginners #paintcoach #arttips #paintingpalette #artpalette #glasspalette#tonedpalette #artadvice

Who needed this reminder?! 🗯️ I thought I’d re-share my most viral video from 2021. I can’t believe there was a time before I realized that I could continuely recycle/reuse the solvent in my oil painting jar - but there was & I wasted so much! So I’m just out here spreading the word once again for any oil painters who havn’t yet learned this. When you leave the jar of mineral spirit/turps/gamsol (whatever you use to clean your brushes) overnight the oil & solvent seperate. The oil paint sludge will settle at the bottom (you can actually use that to make new paint which I’ve talked about in old videos) & you can just pour the clean solvent out from on top into a new jar. 🫗🫙✨ The only real solvent thief is evaporation 💨 so that’s one of the reasons to always have an airtight lid on your jar & use a slower evaporating mineral spirit like Gamsol. (The other good reason to keep a lid on it is so you don’t breathe it in. #oilpainting #oilpaintingtips #gamsol #turpentine #dorisrose #oilpaintingtutorial #arttok #oiloncanvas #dorisroseart #dorisrosetips #paintingtips #oilpainting #arttok #art #artinstruction #paintingtutorial #oilpaintingtutorials m #howtopaint #howtooilpaint

Info in caption for what’s going on lol👇 See my previous videos for tutorials on how to do what’s shown in the video! This is how I clean out my brush cleaning tank in which I use Gamsol to wash my oil paint brushes at the end of the day (before soap & water). A few times a year it needs a good clean out as sludge builds up below the coils. That sludge goes into a separate jar with which I make new paint. So technically I don’t waste any paint sludge or solvent from my jar. (Again see old videos for more!) 👍 I guess it’s copyright week as I’m still responding to questions from my previous video but so many artists aren’t taught the difference between copyright & ownership. In most countries Once you make an original work of art you own the copyright. So a collector can buy that work from you but they can’t start selling it on tshirts or using it on a website to promote their company and you are fully able to use the image to sell prints or license the image to a brand. Of course there are reasons you might not do this, and you can come to an agreement with the buyer. But that’s courtesy not a legal obligation. #copyrightvsownership #artistcopyright #artbusinessadvice #artistreferences #artistlegalhelp #CopyrightLaw #ArtisticReferences #FairUse #IntellectualProperty #RespectTheArtist #CreativeInspiration #LegalArt #ReferenceEtiquette #CreativeProcess #CopyrightAwareness #ArtistsRights #RespectCopyright #arttips #artinstruction

Info in caption. 👇 🔗 in bio for my recommended clear gesso. Here’s how to invisibly prime a canvas: 🪄 Whenever I make a video about priming canvases I get a few commenters saying they don’t prime their panels/canvases cuz they prefer to see the natural texture of the cotton, linen, copper, aluminum, or wood showing through as part of their artwork. This is an instinct I GET! But this feedback tells me it’s definitely not as well known as it should be just how easy it is to prime your surface properly but invisibly! Proper surface prep (aka gesso) is so important to protect the paint and the surface from damaging or discolouring each other, to help stiffen canvas material, & stop your paint from being absorbed into the surface - this is a huge issue if you’ve ever painted on raw wood! The standard gesso is a white, opaque layer that obscures the surface beneath but you can also get clear/transparent gesso, it’s slightly more absorbent & it dries really clear! So use that to let the raw material show through. Apply a couple of coats so that you create a sufficient seal so that you don’t have to size (seal) the surface first. Most artist quality gesso will dry very matte/clear but they may darken the surface a bit or add a touch of sheen depending on the brand. Check out Jackson’s Art blog as they have recently done a study testing a bunch of different clear primers - I’ll add a 🔗 in bio. Most sizes that some artists use before gesso to seal the surface and create more tension in the canvas (aka fluid Matt medium, acrylic gloss medium, RSG, Artist grade (archival) PVA or my fave Gac 100) are also clear & could be used underneath clear gesso or by themselves as a few layers can create a sufficient ground to be used without any gesso primer on top. Another trick I like to do is to use clear gesso over your underdrawing to seal it in so it doesn’t smudge into the paint! I got so sick of charcoal drawings staining the paint & I love this hack!! #AcrylicGesso #ArtSurfacePrep #GessoTechniques #ArtPrimer #ArtistsEssentials #GessoMagic #ArtPreparation #AcrylicArt #PaintingTips #ArtisticProcess #ArtSupplies #CreateEveryday #DIYArt #ArtTutorials #ArtisticSkills #TikTokArt #AcrylicPainting #ArtisticInspiration #CreativeJourney #ArtisticTips #OilPaintingTutorial #OilPaintingTips #PaintingDemo #OilPaintingTechniques #LearnToPaint #OilPainting101 #ArtLessons #ArtDemo #OilPaintingBeginner #ArtEducation #PaintingTricks #ArtClass #ArtInstruction #OilPaintingLessons #ArtisticGuidance #OilPaintingExplained #dorisrose #dorisroseart

What’s your fave medium? There are lots of things that impact drying times of oil paint. In artist-grade paints, each colour dries at its own rate as each colour’s oil to pigment ratio differs. Drying time can be adjusted considerably using mediums. Higher oil content (fatter) mediums mean longer drying times. Drying time is only one factor that may make you choose a certain oil medium but it’s a big one. It all depends on your process. No matter what oil paints dry way slower than other types of paint - an average of 6 months to be fully cured. FAST DRYING: if, like me, you want to work in layers or you have just switched from acrylics you’ll like a fast drying medium. The quickest drying available are Alkyd mediums like Liquin. Also solvent-based mediums that use turpentine or mineral spirits in combo with a drying oil can help paint dry faster by accelerating the evaporation of the solvent. MEDIUM DRYING Stand oils: These are thickened linseed oils that dry relatively fast compared to raw linseed oil are on the faster end. But poppy oil & cold pressed or refined linseed oil take a medium amount of time to dry. SLOW DRYING Traditional drying oils like safflower & walnut oil generally dry slowest out of the popular drying oils. These are best if you want the maximum possible time when you painting is ‘open’ and workable. You should still check the drying times listed on the labels of the mediums you buy as there are lots of types & brands but from my experience I’d recommend Liquin for fast drying, refined linseed for medium, & safflower for slow. #oilmedium #oilmediums #oilpaintingtips #academicart #artistsontiktok #artinstruction

Do this with your new brush! ✍️ Have you ever bought new brushes & found them to be super stiff? That’s cuz many brushes are coated with ‘water soluble sizing’ to protect the bristles before they get to your studio. Don’t worry - it’s easy to remove the sizing by rinsing your brush in warm water & using some mild brush soap. This will immediately make the bristles soft & ready to use! Ps. If you’ve ever used a stiff brush not knowing you should remove the coating/sizing before using don’t worry. After using the brush a little bit the sizing will ware away. I’ve been super busy this week so I thought this is a repost of one of my old videos. Id recently bought some new Princeton Aspen brushes & decided to make a video about removing the sizing before I used them. I’ve shortened the video a little but you can find the original way down my feed. 👍 Gotta love that new brush feeling! #dorisrose #dorisroseart #dorisrosetips #paintingtips #oilpainting #arttok #art #artinstruction #paintingtutorial #oilpaintingtutorial #oilpaintingtips #howtopaint #howtooilpaint #paintbrush #tbt

You’re style will find you! 💫🫵 Mistakes new painters make & how to avoid them Part 4/4 👉 see my profile for more. The only true mistake a new painter can make is not painting. But there are habits that are more prevalent in newer artists (all of which I’ve been guilty of at some point 🙋♀️) that it’s useful to be aware of! 👗Trying to immediately find your style. Look at the early work of Picasso, it was realistic. Start with an open mind for techniques & just paint - your style will ultimately find you. 🫤Comparing yourself to other artists. It’s always helped me to think about improving on myself from yeasterday & growing with each painting. 💃🏻Painting for other people. It sounds self-centred but it’s so important to make the art that you want to see. Don’t worry about how it fits into today’s art market. I don’t care if other people don’t like my work If I made it for me & that’s a powerful confidence to find as an artist. #dorisrose #dorisroseart #dorisrosetips #paintingtips #oilpainting #arttok #art #artinstruction #paintingtutorial #oilpaintingtutorial #oilpaintingtips #howtopaint #howtooilpaint

What are your thoughts? Is it necessary? Sorry for the clunky editing! I just think it’s best not to share my collector’s personal info with the whole internet. 😅 The blurry part just provides extra context about this particular commission such as who commissioned & why. A "certificate of authenticity" is just a document from the artist that accompanies the artwork & should be kept safe. It usually just contains basic details about the work such as title, medium, dates, dimensions, provenance as well as a small photo of the artwork. Although you can include as much info you think will be useful including specific mediums, pigments etc. It’s just handy for insurance & potential future resale. I make mine on the computer & tailor the details for each work. I print it on good quality card stock & embossed & sign them to send out with each piece. I like the more simple, minimalist look but you can also go for a more ornate certificate look. I’ve also seen artists send off for blank certificates from a printing company & hand-write in the details for each specific work. It’s up to you! #CertificateOfAuthenticity #ArtVerification #artbhsinesstips #ArtDocumentation #sellingart #buyingart #ArtProvenance #ArtCollectors #ArtInvestment #ArtAuthentication #packaginary #artisttips #ArtValue #artinstruction #ArtHistory #ArtAppreciation #dorisrose #dorisrosetips #myart #ArtCredibility #Artists #artlovers

Replying to @monmon Good question! If you use someone else’s image as a reference your art is considered derivative work. I only ever use my own references (other than practice studies/sketches). But even so I may use a model release form - It’s not strictly necessary for art but it provides clarity. I’ve also used my client’s images for commissions with permission. But not every artist has access to the subjects they want to paint. So, here’re some guidelines for selling art made using other people’s references: Just note I’m based in Canada & this is just my understanding. ✍️ The simplest thing is to obtain permission from the photographer or copyright owner. ✍️ Use images that the creator has placed in the public domain with a Creative Commons liscence on sites like Wikimedia Commons or images where the copyright has expired. ✍️ Understand fair dealing 🇨🇦 (or fair use 🇺🇸) which allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission if you can prove the artwork is transformative, satirical, you’re not using it to make money, or it’s for education reasons to improve your skills etc. But it’s complex/subjective so it’s best to get legal advice eg. the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). Most characters like Disney are copyrighted & trademarked so can’t be legally used in your art without a licensing agreement unless it qualifies as fair dealing. ✍️Give credit to the original creator of the image & acknowledge their contribution to your artwork. #artistcopyright #artbusinessadvice #artistreferences #artistlegalhelp #CopyrightLaw #ArtisticReferences #FairUse #IntellectualProperty #RespectTheArtist #CreativeInspiration #LegalArt #ReferenceEtiquette #CreativeProcess #CopyrightAwareness #ArtistsRights #RespectCopyright #arttips #artinstruction
