And yes we could go pick them and put a lot of time and effort into making things like cider or vinegar… but it costs us about $18/hr per worker to do so. Because of this, we just cut our losses and let the wildlife have a snack 🐿️ PLUS, these apples quickly break down and return to the soil, ultimately helping feed the tree! Cosmic Crisp®️ apples are special to me not just because we grow them, but because they were bred through my alma mater! For 20 years Dr. Bruce Barritt, and others at Washington State University, worked to breed, develop, and research the cross between Enterprise and Honeycrisp called “WA-38.” Dr. Carolyn Ross then led the efforts to name the apple by organizing focus groups and taste tests! The physical traits coupled with the eating qualities of WA-38 led to the name Cosmic Crisp®️! I’m always amazed at the work done in developing a new apple variety far before we as farmers get to even plant them. Extra proud to be part of a school doing such innovative things! I had to get these orders finished so I could load them up and leave right after church. I started @kaits.crates when I was 16 as an FFA project and a way to make a little money. It’s been fun to see my business go from just a few boxes sold around my community to now delivering to a town 2 hours away! I hope you learned a thing or two about the fruit I think is A-OKAY to put in a box, even though they aren’t “perfect.” I hate food waste and know my customers have never complained about an uglier piece of fruit here and there. 🫶🍎🍐 #smallbusiness #farmer #local #freshfruit #apples #kaitscrates #wherefoodcomesfrom #washington #agriculture #horticulture

equipment takes a beating during the growing season, from tractors to ladders! Faulty equipment not only puts our employees at risk, but it can also turn into a big draw on funds if we are constantly replacing them. (Example: a new ladder is about $400 x 60 ladders). PLUS, we are required to give our contract workers a certain amount of hours per week. So, if the weather isn’t cooperating for outside work, this is a GREAT alternative and puts those hours to good use. Simple upkeep and maintenance in the off-season helps us start off on the right foot for the next growing season. And of course as managers, helps us keep our input costs down and our orchard running as smoothly as possible! Hope ya learned something new:) Favorite mug (handmade) : @Big Horn Bison Ranch . . . #coldsnap #orchard #farm #applegirl #freshfruit #ageducation #learnonreels #agriculture #wherefoodcomesfrom #farmmanagement #apples #pears #washington #pnw #bighornbison #coffee #claymug
