Yesterday, in church, my pastor preached on Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek - on non-retaliation and radical forgiveness being the Christian way, exemplified by Jesus voluntarily going to the cross and giving His life for the same people who were responsible for the humiliation, violence, and injustice done to Him. Then, at night, Daniel and I watched a bit of Chris Rock’s new Netflix special that literally just came out, primarily to watch him address being slapped across the face and humiliated publicly by Will Smith. He explained why he didn’t retaliate in the moment. We then watched ‘Next’, a Nicholas Cage film where his character could see 2 mins into the future and go through all the permutations depending what he chooses to do. In every situation that he could predict, walking up to an aggressive guy in a cafe where who was harrassing the future love of his life and engaging with him would result in failure, except the one he eventually chose: the one where he would allow himself to get punched in the face by the guy. When I realised this I was like: God is so funny and kind with us. He tends to give us lots of repeat reminders in different ways to get our attention, just in case we miss it the first time. This morning, I realised why He needed to give me 3 reminders yesterday - an unexpected unkind (borderline xenophobic and sexist) message came through the station Whatsapp number towards the end of my shift, and my initial anger quickly turned to compassion: if this person had to make the extra effort to type this message to show his displeasure with my artist name, then he must have been *really* upset. I could have been snarky about this, or replied something mean in return, but that would have made things - and my own mood - worse.
