I love how gorgeous the crab apple trees are in spring. they're filled with bees and birds and butterflies 🐦🐝🦋 this was a tough match because of how detailed it is and how quickly I had to work bc of light changes. my goal is to really get good at plein air painting. I can paint indoors fine, but plein air painting (painting outside, real-time) is a new skill I'm trying to develop. so in order to learn, I gotta keep pushing myself to do the tougher ones. The challenges of painting outdoors! 🌬🌨☀️ With things like crazy wind chill, bugs flying into my palette, and unpredictable lighting, why am I driven to paint outdoors?🥶 I rarely regret painting outdoors, even when it's challenging. The result is always a painting that truly reflects the colors in nature, which is worth every bit of effort and discomfort of painting outdoors. 🏆 The valuable lessons I learn from plein air painting (painting outdoors) are invaluable to the other paintings I make at home. When doing a painting of the Niagara River from home, for example, I reflect back on my experiences outdoors to help me paint the color faithfully. Photos alone are not enough - they're often oversaturated and don't match colors realistically. Luckily, I have my memory and all my completed plein air paintings to guide me. All the heavy layers of clothes, lugging painting supplies, shifting locations for lighting problems....it's worth it. I might get annoyed in the moment, but only for a minute - I know that the result will be worth it. ❄️ Trek out into the cold with me for a new plein air painting, "Frosty Lagoon, Beaver Island." Filmed between back-to-back snowstorms. Add this to your art collection through my website. 🖼 Original plein air painting: varnished, framed, and ready to display 🎥💎A rare treasure for your collection, as the process has been documented, start to finish 🏞 Memorializes the soothing hue of the Niagara River despite the eratic snowstormy winter weather The Process: I raced to paint this in between snowstorms - there was a snowstorm all night and morning, and it let up unexpectedly for a couple hours in the afternoon. The next snowstorm was a couple of hours after I finished. The lighting was changing so rapidly that I had to keep moving and nearly didn't finish. By the time I was done, my boots were soaking wet, and my hands were too chilly to move right. But it was worth it to capture such a pure, authentic hue. Beaver Island: This is a lagoon at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island, N.Y. This lagoon is fed by the Niagara River - the Niagara River was actually in plain view of where I painted this, although you can't see it on film. The spot I'm painting in is especially valued by birdwatchers, as a lot of migratory birds stop here. More info is in the product description on my site.
