– Diuretics– Diuretics are used to treat fluid volume overload & pull excess fluid from the body. Heart failure is an example of a diagnosis which these are used for! –You can think of the 3 D’s of Diuretics – *Decrease blood pressure (BP) *Diurese the body *Dehydrate the body And additionally, we want to administer these (ideally) in the Daytime! No, we won’t always have this option in the clinical world with orders, but it’s important to note for the NCLEX and as a medication fact. Since diuretics increase urine output, morning administration is preferred! ⭐Be sure to know each subcategory of diuretics and HOW they impact electrolyte balance, specifically potassium! I’ve outlined this in the video for you 🙂 So…will loop diuretics cause hypokalemia or hyperkalemia? And why? –Antacids, H2 Blockers, and PPIs– 🫧Antacids -These drugs neutralize existing stomach acid -They work quickly but do not last long! -Immediate relief is felt by the patient, but again, this will not last long! ❌H2 Blockers -Secretion receptors in the stomach are BLOCKED -These work quickly & can last up to 12 hours in patients to provide relief of acid reflux -These are a desired choice among many patients since they work quickly and last longer than antacids! 💊Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) -PPIs inhibit, or block, production of acid in the stomach entirely -Examples include pantoprazole (Protonix) or omeprazole (Prilosec) -These work slowly and take time to build, but provide the most ideal long-term relief -Not effective for rapid onset Why might a patient be STARTED on a PPI while admitted to the hospital? Let me know below 🙂 #RN #BSN #nursingeducation #nursingstudents #nursingnotes #nurse #clinicaleducation #medicationeducation #pharmacology #pharmacy #GERD #nurseinthemaking #pharmacologyflashcards #studyingpharm #pharm #studentnurse #nursingschool

CORE DIFFERENCES between analgesics Key Points: 💥NSAIDs & Aspirin have an anti-inflammatory effect, while Acetaminophen (Tylenol) does not 💥Acetaminophen is more commonly known for its antipyretic properties (or its ability to bring down an elevated body temperature), although ALL 3 of these categories of drugs will help to reduce a fever! –NSAIDs– ✅They are safe for children in appropriate doses, and you will find that ibuprofen (Motrin) and ketorolac (Toradol) are given commonly in practice. ⭐Though these are NOT considered antiplatelets, they DO pose a risk for bleeding, so be aware of this! –ASPIRIN– ❌Aspirin products, or salicylates, should be AVOIDED in children. These pose a risk for Reye’s syndrome in children, a rare but life-threatening condition which can occur after use of these products, and more often after a viral infection 🩸Aspirin is considered an antiplatelet, which is why it’s commonly used in populations at risk for coronary artery disease, cardiac conditions, or risk for clotting –ACETAMINOPHEN– ✅This is safe for children, and is often given in cases of pain or fever. Major complications associated with this drug is LIVER DAMAGE, or hepatotoxicity, which would mainly occur if given in HIGH DOSES. #nursingnotes #nursingstudent #clinicalnotes #BSN #RN #nursesofIG #Pharmacology #pharmacologynursing #pharm #nursingeducation #reelsfornurses #nurseinthemaking #completenursingschoolbundle

Here’s a ⭐💉Skill Walkthrough 🩺 ⭐for Spiking Fluids for Primary IV Infusion! Some tips for this skill: 👉Be sure to clamp the roller clamp prior to spiking the bag 👉You can flip the bag upside down and spike, or hang it on the IV pole and pull the rubber stopper out. The fluid will NOT drain out until the bag is punctured! 👉Once the spike is uncapped, it may NOT touch anything else – keep it from being contaminated 👉Avoid priming over a garbage can for infection purposes. This might be something you see done often, but try to prime over the packaging or a chux pad instead! 👉Squeeze the drip chamber until approximately halfway full 👉 “Scrub the Hub” of your patient’s luer lock port with an alcohol swab prior to attaching 👉Do NOT forget to unclamp after the tubing is fully primed and attached to your patient 🙂Otherwise, they simply won’t receive any fluid if you’re infusing by gravity, or the pump will beep to alert you of an occlusion! Have you performed this skill in simulation lab or clinicals yet? #nursingnotes #nursingskills #nursetok #nursingreels #reelsfornurses #nursesofIG #nurseofinstagram #nursingeducation #clinicaleducation #clinicalinstructors #nursinglife #scrublife #proudnurse #RN #BSN #IV #IVfluids #pharm #nursingschool #nursingstudents

–Selecting a Vein for Peripheral IV insertion – Here are a few tips → 🩸You’ll want to palpate and assess the region for a palpable or “bouncy” vein - FEELING the vein is sometimes more important than SEEING the vein. This is sometimes extra important in the wrist and forearm! These can be a bit more difficult to visualize, but are sometimes the best choices! 🩸Keep it straight (remember you have to insert the whole catheter into the vein, not just part of the needle) 🩸Avoid sites of vein bifurcation (this is where a vein forks). Again, if the small catheter is too long, that fork will not allow for successful insertion and a patent line 🩸Consider placement and positioning of the patient. A patient who will be moving or bending their arms frequently, in surgery, in labor, etc. should have a line which won’t be occluding, so avoid the antecubital (AC) and consider hand or forearm instead Have you inserted an IV yet? #nursesofIG #nursingnotes #nursesofinstagram #RN #BSN #IVinsertion #pharmacology #pharm #nursingskills #nursing #scrublife #nursehacks #nurses #nurseinthemaking #simlab
