The story surrounding the cursed grave of Seath Mor is fascinating, however there is an alternative, less interesting explanation for the iron grid which covers the stones. It is that the stones were previously stolen and retrieved and the iron grate was placed over the grave to protect them from being stolen again. There are many hidden gems to be found within the Rothiemurchus estate. A beautiful Loch nestled deep in the forest, ann island castle ruin with a buried causeway and of course the cursed grave of a 14th century warrior. All just a stone’s throw from Aviemore! “Half a capital and half a country town, the whole city leads a double existence; it has long trances of the one and flashes of the other; like the king of the Black Isles, it is half alive and half a monumental marble.” Robert Louis Stevenson’s Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes, from which this quote is taken, is full of beautiful descriptions of “Auld Reekie”. After the 45 Rebellion the Government used The “King’s pleasure” which involved Jacobite prisoners being crammed into a dungeon in Carlisle Castle without food, water or sanitation facilities until they were brought out for execution. The picture shows “licking-stones”, where desperate prisoners licked the walls to obtain some moisture, can still be seen today. Most of the prisoners who survived their time in the dungeons were then sent for trial, and tried for treason – which was, of course, a capital offence. In those days hanging drawing and quartering was the punishment if found guilty, which did actually happen at Carlisle. About a third of the prisoners were executed for treason. A third were transported as endentured servants to the West Indies, and another third (a lot of the lower ranking Jacobite prisoners) were actually allowed to leave. source:england-heritage.org.uk #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottish #scottishhistory #jacobite #outlander #kilt #meninkilts #visitscotland #scottishhighlands #highlander #greatkilt #carlislecastle #lickingstones

Many people have grown up knowing One For Sorrow, the popular magpie nursery rhyme where the number of birds seen at any one time will determine whether you have bad luck or good luck. The earliest version of the rhyme was recorded in 1780 in a note in John Brand’s Observations on Popular Antiquities. It was a much simpler version with just 4 lines: One for sorrow,
Two for mirth,
Three for a funeral,
And four for birth. source:birdspot.co.uk #magpies #oneforsorrow #scotland #andythehighlander #kilt

A dreich day at Eilean Donan Castle. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands. Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932. source:eileandonancastle.co.uk #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottish #scottishhistory #outlander #kilt #meninkilts #scottishtour #scotlandtour #highlander #visitscotland #highlands #eileandonancastle

Scottish clans! Which is your favourite clan motto? Let me know in the comments! There are literally hundreds of others that I wanted to include but wasn’t able to fit many into a short video. One of the most widely recognized sources of information on Scottish clans is the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, which lists around 140 distinct clans - however there are far more (some say upward of 500) surnames that are associated with Scottish ancestry. This is a wee snippet of the full @insideweebox “Clan Gatheting” virtual tour that subscribers will be able to watch soon! I got a LOT of questions on last nights video about gravestones - asking me about what the symbols on some of the graves mean - so I thought it would be the perfect time to re-post this as it hopefully answers some of the questions you might have had! This wee video ended up getting about 20 million views across all platforms when I first posted it and it’s very special to me. I also said “sextant” not “sexton” but the auto captions got it wrong! Sorry if you’ve seen it before! I will make more videos on interesting gravestones in future - thank you for all your support! Did you know you can turn a kilt into a hoodie? Here’s a wee kilt hack I’ve not shown many times in the past. The féileadh-mór (great kilt) is a very functional and versatile piece of clothing, this is one example of how it can be worn when trying to stay as warm and dry as possible. #scotland #scottish #kilts #meninkilts #outlander #highlander #discoverscotland #scottishhighlands #hiddenscotland #scotlandtravel #visitscotland #jamiefraser #outlanderstarz #andythehighlander #highlandertours #history #kilt

In Scotland, whisky was originally called Uisge Beath. Uisge Beath is the Scottish Gaelic translation of the Latin term for distilled alcohol: “acqua vitae”, or “water of life”. Over time, the phrase uisge beath was shortened to simply “uisge” (sounds like “oosh-gae”). Eventually, uisge evolved into the word “whisky” we use today. source:historic-uk.com, lyrics by Hozier from “The Humours of Whiskey” #worldwhiskyday #whisky #scotland #hozier #kilt

Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Stirling Bridge - September 11th 1297 According to legend it took the English army three attempts to cross the bridge. The first time they were apparently called back as John de Warenne had overslept. The second time Warenne had received incorrect information that the Scots wanted to negotiate terms. On the third attempt the English soldiers began to cross the bridge properly, signalling the start of the battle. The Vanguard advanced first, led by Hugh de Cressingham. This contained mounted cavalry commanded by Sir Marmaduke de Thweng. Behind the cavalry will have been groups of spearmen and archers on foot (infantry) followed by further units of cavalry and infantry. Not all of these units will have made it across the bridge. Andrew de Moray was mortally injured and died of his wounds. His date of death is unknown, but he is presumed dead by November 1297. William Wallace was knighted and became Guardian of Scotland. He began to issue correspondence to other countries declaring Scotland’s independent status, seeking friendship, and offering trade. One of these letters survives: The Lübeck Letter. This letter is in the name of both Andrew de Moray and William Wallace, suggesting that Moray may still have been alive in October 1297. Another interpretation is that Wallace recognised the valuable contribution of his comrade and wished to continue to honour him. Edward I was not present at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. He was furious at the loss and planned to retaliate. Edward personally led the next invasion of Scotland in 1298. source: www.nationalwallacemonument.com/the-battle-of-stirling-bridge/ #scotland #stirling #scottishhistory #williamwallace #history #scottish #kilt#andythehighlander #highlandertours #outlander #braveheart #stirlingbridge

Doune Castle is a Hollywood A-Lister! It has starred as Winterfell in the pilot episode of Game of Thrones, Castle Leoch in Outlander as well as in the Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Outlaw King to name but a few. Originally built in the 13th century, Doune Castle was most likely damaged during the Scottish Wars of Independence and rebuilt in its present form in the late 14th century. The man who rebuilt it was Robert Stewart, known as the Duke of Albany and grandson of Robert the Bruce. Albany has often been referred to as the ‘uncrowned king of Scotland’, and was the country’s effective ruler from 1388 to his death in 1420. What’s your favourite show/movie that Doune castle has featured in? Can anyone name some appearances that I missed? We will continue the tour inside the castle in tomorrow night’s reel so make sure to follow so you don’t miss it! source:historyhit.com #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottish #scottishhistory #outlander #kilt #meninkilts #visitscotland #scottishhighlands #highlander #jacobite #greatkilt #winterfell #castleleoch #dounecastle #montypython

The Necropolis is the home of one of glasgows most famous ghosts, “Jenny Wi’ the Iron Teeth” The tranquility of the cemetery was disturbed one September evening in 1954, when a policeman responded to reports that hundreds of children had descended upon the cemetery. The local children insisted they were seeking to avenge two young boys who had been attacked by the vampire like beast. Some locals suspected that they had actually seen ‘Jenny wi’ the Iron Teeth’, a demonic hag who was said to have roamed Glasgow Green in the 19th century, dragging unsuspecting children into her lair with her metal jaws.. source:theculturetrip.com #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottishhistory #edinburgh #glasgow #whisky #history #highlands #scottish #kilt #greatkilt #scottishtourguide #castle #castlesofscotland #visitscotland #hiddenscotland #tartan #tour #outlandertour #culross #glasgow #cemetery

To reach this spot in Glen Etive, you must drive down the same road James Bond drives down in “Skyfall”. The car passes between two dark peaks: Buachaille Etive Beag and Buachaille Etive Mòr. Together, they’re known as the ‘Herdsmen of Etive’. Glen Etive was formed by huge volcanic eruptions. Around 420 million years ago, tectonic movement pushed up vast swathes of rock, creating the mountain chains that lace northern Scotland. Millennia of erosion has reduced their original heights. Today, ‘Buachaille Etive Mòr’ stands at 1,021 metres tall, but would originally have been about the size of Mount Everest! If you do visit Glen Etive, or anywhere in Scotland, always remember to respect the countryside and leave no trace. source:geographical.co.uk #skyfall #glenetive #jamesbond #scottishhighlands #andythehighlander #scotland #scottish #kilt #outlander #history #mountains #lochetive #highlandertours #highlands #visitscotland

Public executions were commonplace in Edinburgh for centuries. Some went to their deaths after committing a crime, others for their religion or beliefs. Almost certainly some who were not guilty of any crime also went to their deaths. Many died on the gallows or under the executioner’s axe or sword, others were burned. Yet more were beheaded by the fearsome maiden an early form of the guillotine introduced to Edinburgh in the mid 16th century. Some high-profile individuals were hung, drawn and quartered with various body parts being sent for display in towns throughout Scotland as a warning to others. The final execution in Edinburgh was George Bryce AKA the Ratho murderer. He was executed on 21 June 1864 following his murder of a young woman. source:trulyedinburgh.com #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottishhistory #edinburgh #outlander #glasgow #whisky #history #highlands #scottish #kilt #greatkilt #scottishtourguide #visitscotland #hiddenscotland #tartan #sassenach #edinburgh #beltedplaid #plaid #greatkilt #royalmile
