Sippy cups are not necessary for most babies & toddlers. For some, it is a needed in-between step due to motor or other difficulties, but IMO, straw and open cup are the way to go with your baby. Introduce open cups and straws when:
-Your baby is sitting independently with good stability, brings objects to their mouth with both hands, and is interested in drinking! You can do both generally around the same time, there isn’t a need to just do one then the other. Whatever is easiest for you! #strawdrinking #babystraw #strawcup #toddlercup #toddlerlife #parentinghacks #responsivefeeding #babyledweaning #slp #feedingtherapy

Here’s my first and second tips for teaching your child to drink from a straw. You can start this as early as 6 to 7 months if your child is showing the following readiness signs: -sitting independently (or close/stable with support) - bringing objects to their mouth with two hands -showing interest when they see you drinking from a straw! If you give it a try, and your child doesn’t seem to be ready yet, please don’t be discouraged! Continue to offer opportunities for your child to explore the straw cup over time 💙 You get to offer the opportunities for learning with gentle support, and your child sets the pace for learning. Tell me what you think about this cup! I like the straw size and shape. This cup has a valve in the straw, but it was pretty easy for me to get water out. Seems pretty leakproof! I do think the price point is a little high at around $19. Added it to my Amazon idea list thru link in bio if you want to try it. #strawdrinking #babystraw #strawcup #toddlercup #toddlerlife #baby #responsivefeeding #babyledweaning #sip #feedingtherapy

🥤This is the most common issue that comes up in response to anything I post about straw cups! 🥤Typically with straw cups, I like to start with shorter straws that are relatively narrow, because the flow tends to be slower and therefore easier for a baby to handle as they are learning a new way to drink. 🥤Sometimes in the beginning, the flow is still hard to manage. 🥤You might see your child spit out liquid or cough. If it doesn’t start to get better pretty quickly, you might want to try putting something thicker in the cup to help your child control the flow better. 🥤If that doesn’t work, you may want to try a straw cup with a valve to slow down the liquid a little bit more. 🥤If you try all of these things, and your child continues to struggle and is not getting better with practice, talk with your pediatrician and ask for a referral to a feeding specialist! 👉🖇️ to my favorite cups in bye oh! #strawdrinking #babystraw #strawcup #toddlercup #toddlerlife #parentinghacks #responsivefeeding #babyledweaning #slp #feedingtherapy

One way to help your child learn to drink from a straw and figure out how to use this new object, is to use a cup that you can squeeze a little bit to help the liquid come up part of the way. That way when your child initiates drinking on the straw, they will get the liquid more quickly! This can help them figure it out faster and prevent frustration. But – you must be careful to squeeze gently, so you don’t accidentally flood them! If this is challenging, you can use a liquid that is slightly thicker like a smoothie. You could also use a honey bear bottle for this or Rubbermaid litterless juice box.
