Black Fins is out now. A song for my dad. When I was 15, my dad died. Washed up dead on a beach in Mexico. I didn’t know he was there. He took his own life. We didn’t even know he did it until we went back to LA to clean out the house. Within a few days, I went from not hearing from my dad for a month and missing my bi-annual court mandated trip back to my hometown to putting all of my lifelong belongings into little boxes with strangers so the bank couldn’t take all of my stuff away. I found some notes on his desk, and I hope you’ll forgive me for not telling the whole world what they said. He died in Mexico while snorkeling and, somehow, it wasn’t an accident that he died. I still don’t know what that means. And 14 years later, I am no closer to an answer. I’m hardly the only person with a story that ends like that. I’ve wanted to write a song about this ever since. And I’ve wanted to go to the place he was found with my sister, too. The fact that I did it for a music video was really nothing more than a means to that end - having that moment. It felt like it would bring me closer to him again. I think that’s all this is really for for me. I hope you like this song, I have put a lot of myself into it. And if you can find yourself relating to it, I hope you feel a little seen today. Those of us who have little situations like these can exchange little nods and “me too”s - and it’s nice to have that passive feeling of camaraderie - but I wanted to contribute to a bit of solidarity for people suffering with that same eternal lack of closure. Anyway, this is an important one to me. It’s a big moment in my life. I’m really happy I got to do this. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed making it for you #newmusic #rickymontgomery

14 years ago, my dad’s body was found on a beach in Mexico. It seemed like an accident, then I found the letters he left behind. That moment has defined my whole life. I’ve always dreamed of going to that beach myself and making a video there with my sister. Now, I’m very proud to say I did.
