Scotland’s kings and queens used Blackness Castle as a state prison. It was used to house middle and low status prisoners as well as those of higher office. Many of them were held here in the stem tower. This room was relatively well appointed with a fireplace, a window and a latrine giving the prisoner a basic level of comfort. It’s likely that the Border reiver ‘Crukit Dande’ Ormiston was held here in 1561 when he was a ‘guest of Blackness In stark contrast, prisoners of low status were held in the pit prison below. These wretched souls endured horrific conditions. Imagine being stuck in the cold and dark as the pit was ‘slopped out’ twice a day by the high tide. The damp conditions would have made it mouldy, smelly and uncomfortable. Rats would have been frequent visitors. source:Blackness Visitor Information Board #scotland #castle #castlesofscotland #outlander #visitscotland #history #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scottish #castles

The story surrounding the cursed grave of Seath Mor is fascinating, however there is an alternative, less interesting explanation for the iron grid which covers the stones. It is that the stones were previously stolen and retrieved and the iron grate was placed over the grave to protect them from being stolen again. There are many hidden gems to be found within the Rothiemurchus estate. A beautiful Loch nestled deep in the forest, ann island castle ruin with a buried causeway and of course the cursed grave of a 14th century warrior. All just a stone’s throw from Aviemore! Thank you to @tartan_trailblazers for writing up an amazing article on this hidden gem. source:tartantrailblazers.blog @tartantrailblazers #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #meninkilts #kilts #scottish #lovescotland #simplyscotland #highlandcows #tartan #scottishhistory #whisky #outlander #outlanderseason #lallybroch #samheughan #jamiefraser #caitrionabalfe #clairefraser #outlanderstarz #sassenach #outlanderfans #outlanderfilminglocation #outlandercast #edinburgh #highlander #scottishhighlands #kilt

“Half a capital and half a country town, the whole city leads a double existence; it has long trances of the one and flashes of the other; like the king of the Black Isles, it is half alive and half a monumental marble.” Robert Louis Stevenson’s Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes, from which this quote is taken, is full of beautiful descriptions of “Auld Reekie”. Despite being set in London, Stevenson’s famous tale of Jekyll and Hyde is thought to be heavily inspired by Edinburgh because of this ‘double existence’. source:edinburghnews.scotsman.com #edinburgh #scotland #scottish #visitscotland #explorescotland #history #scottishhistory #gothic #outlander #kilt #andythehighlander #highlandertours #alba #greatkilt #tartan #city #scotlandtravel #edinburghcity #royalmile #edinburghscotland #unlimitedscotland #edinburghphotography #hiddenscotland

P O L T A L L O C H H O U S E 🏴 Poltalloch House is a large Jacobean mansion of two storeys, designed by William Burn in the 1830s. It was stripped and unroofed in the 1950s, and is now a shell.
‘Pooltalach’ is marked on Blaeu’s map of Lorn. The lands were held by the Campbells, but passed to the Malcolms (or MacCallum, as they were originally) in 1562. Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch and his son Archibald signed an oath of allegiance to George I in 1715. Poltalloch House was built to replace Kilmartin House . One of the family, Colonel George Malcolm, was the first Director of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 1946.
The Malcolms now live at Duntrune Castle, and have a loft and were buried at the church at Kilmartin, where there are carved slabs as well as an old stone cross in the church. Too costly to repair, the roof of this mansion was removed in 1957 and the house has since been left to be reclaimed by mother nature. Now trees grow from inside the building out and the decaying walls are covered with mosses, lichens and ferns. There is no access to the site also because the walls continue to crumble, floors crash into what were once servants quarters and the cellars and what remain of any wooden roof structures cave in all too regularly, but for science it is an important site to monitor as new life creeps in between the stones and gradually takes back the building for itself. It was home to some of Scotland’s wealthiest lairds who forged their fortune largely in the sugar cane plantations of Jamaica. According to an earlier paper by historian Professor Allan MacInness, the family’s commercial success was founded partly on their commodity trading in sugar, rum, cotton, cattle and slaves. Now trees have taken root in the rooms of the grand mansion once filled with riches, people and parties. #scotland #castle #history #foryou #visitscotland #braveheart #outlander

After the 45 Rebellion the Government used The “King’s pleasure” which involved Jacobite prisoners being crammed into a dungeon in Carlisle Castle without food, water or sanitation facilities until they were brought out for execution. The picture shows “licking-stones”, where desperate prisoners licked the walls to obtain some moisture, can still be seen today. Most of the prisoners who survived their time in the dungeons were then sent for trial, and tried for treason – which was, of course, a capital offence. In those days hanging drawing and quartering was the punishment if found guilty, which did actually happen at Carlisle. About a third of the prisoners were executed for treason. A third were transported as endentured servants to the West Indies, and another third (a lot of the lower ranking Jacobite prisoners) were actually allowed to leave. source:england-heritage.org.uk #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottish #scottishhistory #jacobite #outlander #kilt #meninkilts #visitscotland #scottishhighlands #highlander #greatkilt #carlislecastle #lickingstones

EILEAN DONAN CASTLE 🏴 Eilean Donan Castle was originally a seat of the Clan MacKenzie, but it also has strong links to Clan MacRae who became constables of the castle in 1509. It is descendants of Clan MacRae that currently hold the titles of the castle although it is technically owned by a charitable trust now. History ~~~~~~
The name Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, is most probably called after the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD. There are several churches dedicated to Donan in the area and it is likely that he formed a small cell or community on the island during the late 7th century. The first fortified structure was not built on the island until the early 13th century as a defensive measure, protecting the lands of Kintail against the Vikings who raided, settled and controlled much of the North of Scotland and the Western Isles between 800 and 1266. From the mid 13th century, this area was the quite seperate “Sea Kingdom” of the Lord of the Isles where the sea was the main highway and the power of feuding clan chiefs was counted by the number of men and galleys or “birlinns” at their disposal. Eilean Donan offered the perfect defensive position. Over the centuries, the castle itself has expanded and contracted in size. The medieval castle was probably the largest, with towers and a curtain wall that encompassed nearly the entire island. The main keep stood on the island’s highest point. Around the end of the 14th century the area of the castle was reduced to about a fifth of its original size and, although the reason is unclear, it probably relates to the number of men required to defend the structure. By the 16th century a hornwork was added to the east wall to offer a firing platform for the newly introduced cannons. Eilean Donan also played a role in the Jacobite risings of the 17th and 18th centuries, which ultimately culminated in the castle’s destruction… In 1719 the castle was garrisoned by 46 Spanish soldiers who were supporting the Jacobites. They had established a magazine of gunpowder, and were awaiting the delivery of weapons and cannon from Spain. The English Government caught wind of the intended uprising and sent three heavily armed frigates The Flamborough, The Worcester, and The Enterprise to quell matters. The bombardment of the castle lasted three days, though met with limited success due to the enormity of the castle walls, which in some places are up to 14 feet thick. Finally, Captain Herdman of The Enterprise sent his men ashore and over-whelmed the Spanish defenders. Following the surrender, the government troops discovered the magazine of 343 barrels of gunpowder which was then used to blow up what had remained from the bombardment… For the best part of 200 years, the stark ruins of Eilean Donan lay neglected, abandoned and open to the elements, until Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911. Along with his Clerk of Works, Farquar Macrae, he dedicated the next 20 years of his life to the reconstruction of Eilean Donan, restoring her to her former glory. The castle was rebuilt according to the surviving ground plan of earlier phases and was formally completed in the July of 1932. #scotland #fyp #outlandertiktok #braveheart #outlander

A dreich day at Eilean Donan Castle. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands. Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932. source:eileandonancastle.co.uk #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottish #scottishhistory #outlander #kilt #meninkilts #scottishtour #scotlandtour #highlander #visitscotland #highlands #eileandonancastle
