Swipe right to see a man and his dog after a full day of hiking and taking in Banff’s natural beauty. Steeler hasn’t been on many hikes before, so 8+ miles was a bit much for him! The views were worth it and he was so well-behaved. 🥲 Thankfully, Miranda and I split our duties on carrying him down the mountain, and he had the will-power to finish out the last few miles on his own! Overall, Steeler gets an A- on the day, only because he started aggressively barking while I was hunting for a geocache. Regardless, Steeler has behaved the entire trip and I am so lucky to share the bond with him that I have. If you have a dog, you know how much these memories are treasured! If you don’t have a dog, this is your sign to get one. They really are a man’s best friend! Fortunately for all of you, I was able to find the cache that Steeler was barking near, and I have some great footage of our adventure! You can’t take the genetic instinct out of the breed, y’all 🙌🏼 Work WITH your breed, don’t work against it. If you’re frustrated by behaviors that are literally bred into the breed, give your dog the right outlets and stimulation to do what’s in their blood. Herding breeds share a genetic instinct to herd - to control the environment, including other animals AND humans. Denying your working breed the instinct that runs in their DNA can cause alternative behaviors such as nipping at your heels, excessive barking, and chasing moving objects. Genetic behaviors goes for all dogs, not just herding breeds. I know, for example, that Aussies are cute and fluffy, but be sure to look into the history of Aussies before getting one, because oftentimes, there may be behaviors that are not well suited for your household. If you’re getting a working dog with the intention of it being a lap dog, good luck. the more you learn about working dogs (or dogs in general) and what they were bred to do, the better you will be in catering to that dog’s needs.
