A heart attack (myocardial infarction) happens when a coronary artery gets clogged. As a consequence of this, blood can’t deliver oxygen to some myocardial cells (heart muscle cells). Myocardial cells need a high constant supply of oxygen for them to be able to produce ATP energy by cellular respiration. If a group of myocardial cells does not receive oxygen, then they won’t be able to produce energy. If these myocardial cells stop producing energy, then not only they will stop contracting (which takes a lot of energy) but in a matter of minutes they will die (being alive requires energy!). . Dead myocardial cells will eventually be replaced by fibroblasts and scar tissue will get formed. The problem is that unlike myocardial cells, scar tissue cells can’t contract. Therefore, the heart of a patient that survives a heart attack will beat less strongly. The good news is that heart attack patients can to some extent compensate the loss of contractile myocardial cells by strengthening the rest of the heart muscle and this way they can improve their long-term quality of life. . I love the staining that shows the connections between myocardial cells (intercalated discs) and their nuclei. I also love the last staining of heart tissue that shows the beauty of the cardiac muscle arrangement and the striations pattern of the cardiac muscle cells. . The heart is such an incredible organ! It is difficult to imagine that the muscle cells of an average human heart need to contract more than 100,000 times each day!! Just incredible!! . For this video I used a Leica ZOOM 200 stereoscope and an Olympus BX41 microscope at up to 400X magnification. #microscopy #microscope #physiology #heart #myocardium #heartattack #intercalateddisc #hearthistology #drbioforever

One of the most amazing facts about the human body is that all the eggs that a female will ever produce in her lifetime will be produced during the first few months of fetal development!! These eggs will remain in a state of suspended animation in the ovaries until the moment they get ovulated (one at the time usually). In other words, an egg that gets ovulated when a female is 40 years old was previously dormant in the ovary for 40 years until the moment it got ovulated. Just amazing! . By the way, the eggs in the ovaries are surrounded by protective cells called follicular cells. The egg plus the protective cells that surround an egg is called the follicle. The Primordial Follicles are the follicles that are formed to protect the eggs as the eggs are generated. During the ovulation cycle, some primordial follicles will become activated and will grow until one of them gets ovulated. . The ovaries that you saw in this video are cat ovaries. Specifically, what you saw was thin slices of cross-sections of cat ovaries that had been fixed and stained. . For this video I used a Leica ZOOM 200 stereoscope and an Olympus CX31 microscope at up to 200X magnification. #microscopy #microscope #physiology #gametes #gonads #ovary #follicles #oocytes #drbioforever

💥Mitosis💥 . Is the process of cell division that happens in our body’s cells. It consists of several stages: . 👉🏼Prophase: The chromosomes inside the cell become visible and start to coil up. The protective layer around the nucleus breaks down, and structures called centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell. . 👉🏼Prometaphase: The nuclear envelope completely disappears, and the chromosomes connect to spindle fibers. The chromosomes become even more tightly packed. . 👉🏼Metaphase: The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell, like they are on a plate. The spindle fibers attach to each chromosome to make sure they are properly aligned. . 👉🏼Anaphase: The pairs of chromosomes separate, and the spindle fibers pull them to opposite ends of the cell. . 👉🏼Telophase: The separated chromosomes reach the ends of the cell, and new nuclear membranes start forming around them. The chromosomes begin to relax and become less tightly packed. The spindle fibers break down. . 👉🏼Cytokinesis: The cell’s cytoplasm divides, forming two separate daughter cells. In animal cells, the cell pinches in the middle, while in plant cells, a wall-like structure forms to separate the two cells. . Through mitosis, the original cell divides into two identical cells, each with its own set of chromosomes. These new cells can then perform their specific functions or continue dividing if needed. . #mitosis #cellbiology #biology #physiology #anatomy #humanbody #btosteopathy

POV: we're dancing at the party but I'm trying to explain why caffeine makes you feel awake... 🤨 Caffeine blocks the "sleepydust" receptor in your brain. ("sleepydust" is adenosine, a neurotransmitter). Usually, when adenosine activates its receptor, it makes you feel more sleepy. However, when caffeine is blocking that receptor, adenosine can't it to make you feel sleepy, even though the adenosine is still hanging around in your brain. Eventually, the caffeine unblocks from the receptor and all of that adenosine is able to come make you feel sleepy again. This was upwards of my 50th attempt at recording this (!) so the tragic ending is here to stay. If you're wondering how long caffeine stays in the body, its elimination half-life is about 5 hours, which means that after 5 hours your body has eliminated about 50% of the caffine. After another 5 hours, it would eliminate half of what remained (i.e., after a total of 10 hours, it's down to around 25%. #science #til #todayilearned #physiology #edutok #drnoc

Why do we breathe? You may say “because we need oxygen” But why do we need oxygen? Our cells need oxygen to burn fuels by cellular respiration, which is the main way cells produce the energy that they need. But why do cells in the body need energy? They need energy to do whatever type of work that they may need to do (e.g. muscle cells need energy to be able to contract). But cells also need energy to just stay alive (being alive requires plenty of energy too!). So, if cells do not get oxygen, they stop working and can die pretty quickly. The respiratory system facilitates the process of getting oxygen from the air and passing the oxygen to the blood so that the oxygen can be transported and delivered to all the cells of the body. When cells use oxygen to produce energy by cellular respiration, they generate CO2 as a byproduct. Blood will also carry CO2 from the cells to the lungs so that we get CO2 out of our body. In other words, every time that we inhale (breathe in), we take oxygen into our body and every time we exhale (breathe out), we take CO2 out of our body. . The more efficiently our lungs are able to facilitate the taking in of oxygen and the getting out of CO2, the easier it is for the body cells to keep on producing energy. When the lungs get damaged, the lungs have more difficulties getting oxygen in and CO2 out and this becomes a serious problem for the physiology of the body. . Smoking can damage the lungs and therefore reduce the efficiency of the breathing process. Another thing that smoking does is to expose the lung cells to carcinogenic chemicals from the tobacco combustion. Over time, exposing lung cells to these chemicals can lead to mutations in their DNA, which eventually can turn these cells into cancerous cells. . For this video I used a Leica ZOOM 200 stereoscope and an Olympus BX41 microscope at up to 1000x magnification #microscopy #microscope #physiology #lung #histology #lungofsmoker #alveoli #drbioforever
