where do deaf people fit into this…who will the teachers be? Who will be teaching THEIR language? How qualified will the tutors be? How knowledgeable will they be on deaf culture? Go read the comments on some of the big instagram posts celebrating this news…so many people are concerned with how teachers will fit this into the curriculum, how they already lack funding, how this is a waste of funding, even some ignorant people commenting how there will now “be a lack of students who will choose to study french or german or spanish”, as if those languages will die out if english students don’t learn them. I was forced to do a german gcse, I remember nothing. Whilst at home I was signing away and the school couldnt care less. Deaf people have access needs, they are living in a hearing bias world, look up hearing supremacy, hearing people are so ignorant. And yes, BSL is a recognised language, but it is not respected as such. I test anyone to try and have a conversation with my parents and then tell me sign language is easy. The access to learning sign language in the UK has always been difficult but this GCSE will inspire so many more people to learn BSL and make this hearing world just a little easier for the thousands of deaf people who have to put up with ignorant hearing people everyday. I wish I had this GCSE available to me instead of German. The younger generation are going to change the world whilst the older generation are trying to stop the change. BSL being made a GCSE does not take away from other GCSE options. God this is a great step for the language but we are not done. #deafawareness #coda #deafmumcheck #childofdeafadults #bsl
