Something I don’t talk often enough about is Micaela’s work schedule. As a surgical resident, her hours were very demanding. Now that she is an attending, her hours have gotten better but with on call hours, conference travel, and continued training, her demands are still great. Here are some ways we navigate her demanding schedule: •We FaceTime. A lot. While I’m walking to school with the kids, before bedtimes and just random moments when Micaela is free throughout the day. This helps her feel connected to the everyday stuff which I think is so important for all of us. •We really have to plan. Often trips and vacations are planned far in advance as she has to plan her call schedule with the other faculty. If spontaneous things come up when she is on, we hope for trades! •So often we lean on our community! Friends and neighbors helping with picking up a kid here or driving a kid there. Play dates at friends houses- it all helps so much. •Micaela is so present when she is home. She is a very involved parent and when she is home, she is HOME. She still has to take calls and answers texts occasionally, but she is really good at not letting it impact her day with us. •We don’t wait around for her. We continue on with our plans, and she meets us where we are at. I didn’t always do this during her Residency and it was hard. •Forming friendships with other spouses of resident and surgeons! It’s always helpful to have someone who understands exactly what you are going through. For those of you in the medical community- is there anything else you would add?
