The controversial subject of Littermate Syndrome. Littermate syndrome is what is referred to when two puppies are brought home at the same time and bond too closely with each other. This can seriously affect their ability to bond with humans and their social development. It can create extremely anxious, sometimes aggressive dogs. It can also sometimes take a few years for the worst of it to surface. On the other side, there are many instances of puppies being raised together and living full lives without issue. So to say this will happen every time is false and this is where the controversy lies. It’s not a guaranteed problem, however… Raising a puppy properly is hard work. Raising two puppies properly is triple the work, as both dogs need to be trained and socialized individually and then again together. The puppies need to spend a decent amount of time apart and play time should be monitored as with any two dogs. It’s extremely hard to do in a lot of environments. Some people have successfully raised two puppies, and those people are allowed to be proud of their dogs and their achievements, but I believe it is a disservice to all parties involved to recommend two puppies at once, and I am not alone on that. No reputable rescue or breeder will give you two puppies at the same time. *this is not applicable to very young (<7weeks) orphaned puppies needing FOSTER homes What are your thoughts on Littermate syndrome?
