Dear ESFNA Board & Executive Committee, As you gather for the annual October meeting this weekend, I regret not being able to join you in person this year. In lieu of a formal report, I’ve opted to provide my input on the state of affairs in a public forum, and share my vision for the future of ESFNA. The 40th annual tournament and cultural festival brought together thousands of Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia from across North America. This event remains a vital platform for celebrating our culture, identity, and ideals. ESFNA's commitment to remaining apolitical and free of religious and ethnic affiliations has allowed us to focus on our core mission of promoting sports and culture. Despite our achievements, we faced some challenges, including ensuring the financial stability of ESFNA and maintaining a high level of engagement among our members and supporters. We must explore diverse revenue streams, including partnerships with local businesses and seeking sponsorships from organizations aligned with our mission. The Dallas community organized a plethora of ancillary events during the week of the festival. Let’s push forward a strategic event partnership initiative to increase visibility for the best event organizers and add value for our patrons by adding to our event portfolio. Additionally, we should consider creating a sustainable reserve fund to ensure the long-term financial health of ESFNA. ESFNA's founding principles emphasized creating something for future generations. Let's explore initiatives that will solidify our legacy. ESFNA's impact on our community and its potential for growth remain strong. By addressing financial sustainability, enhancing community engagement, and building a lasting legacy, we can ensure ESFNA's continued success for generations to come. I haven’t explored all the venues yet but #DolbyHouse has been my favorite so far. They have a bunch of immersive activities and events throughout the week. Badges get priority access but you don’t need one to check it out. Twitter is your friend! RSVP for everything you *might* want to attend, just to be safe. If you’re into tech, check out Austin Industry Day during the Creative Industries Expo at the Austin Convention Center on Wednesday, March 15. For the first time ever, you’ll be able to check out the exhibitions for one day only without a SXSW badge or wristband. Leave the car at home! Most of the events are within a 10-15 minute walk of each other. Don’t be afraid explore the city! The streets of Austin are alive with music, art, and culture during SXSW. You can always head over to Sixth Street, where you'll find plenty of bars and venues hosting free shows. Also, stay hydrated! Last but not least, the SXSW GO app provides the best experience to discovering official SXSW events, speakers, performers, and venues. Did Bing just get SMARTER than Google? 😳 If you want to try it out before it’s released to the general public, join the waitlist at bing.com/new Microsoft search engine Bing is getting a major AI refresh, incorporating tech from OpenAI, the company behind the viral chatbot ChatGPT. The new version of Bing adds a sidebar to the usual list of links, which will offer a written response to your query summarizing information found across the web. They’ve also added a new chatbot interface for complex queries—in a demo, they asked if an IKEA loveseat would fit in a Honda Odyssey and got an AI-powered response that estimated it “might fit with the second or third rows folded.” But the response also included a disclaimer that you should always measure the actual items before attempting to transport them. Microsoft also added aspects of ChatGPT into their Edge browser. You can prompt the tool to summarize or compare long financial documents, and even turn those insights into an email, list or social post with a specific tone. Crazy, right? But some AI experts have warned that the technology can’t distinguish between truth and fiction, and sometimes makes up information in convincing ways. Microsoft is aware of the problem and is working with OpenAI to test and improve the service. What do you think?
