⚠️Marburg Virus Outbreak: what you need to know. The CDC has issued a Health Advisory about Rwanda's first confirmed outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD). As of this week, 36 cases and 11 deaths have been reported, including 19 healthcare workers. Marburg virus, part of the same family as Ebola, causes a rare but often fatal hemorrhagic fever. It spreads through direct contact with infected body fluids or contaminated objects (NOT through the air, so it does not transmit as easily as other viruses like COVID). No cases have been reported in the U.S., and the risk remains low outside of Rwanda. Currently, there is no FDA-approved vaccine or treatment, though early supportive care can lower mortality rates. There are several vaccines and medicines in development, and research teams are hurrying to get randomized controlled trials in place to test their efficacy (there are not often opportunities to test them in humans, since outbreaks of MVD are rare and typically small in scale.
