Galvarino, the Handless Mapuche Warrior who Defied Conquistadors by Strapping Knives to His Wrist-Stumps for Revenge Galvarino was a Mapuche warrior from the 16th century Arauco War. This guy's story is absolutely wild. After being captured in the Battle of Lagunillas (Chile), he and other prisoners were brutally mutilated by the Spanish governor, García Hurtado de Mendoza. Some had their right hand and nose cut off, but Galvarino had both his hands chopped off. Instead of breaking him, this brutal act only fueled his desire for revenge. He returned to his people and showed them his mutilated wrists, urging them to rise up against the Spanish invaders. The Mapuche council recognized his bravery and appointed him to lead a squadron. Galvarino didn't let his lack of hands stop him. He fastened knives to his wrist-stumps and continued to fight in the Arauco War. At the Battle of Millarapue, he led his squadron against Mendoza's forces, even managing to strike down Mendoza's second-in-command. He inspired his men by showing his mutilated arms, telling them to fight without fear of death. Sadly, Galvarino was ultimately captured again and executed, either by being thrown to the dogs or by hanging, depending on the source.
