It was love at first flight for this unlikely duo … A musk lorikeet and red-tailed black cockatoo have become unexpected friends at the Bonorong wildlife sanctuary in Tasmania. Raphael, a musk lorikeet, and George, a red-tailed black cockatoo, have forged a bond despite initial concerns about the huge difference in their sizes. Greg Irons, the director of Bonorong wildlife sanctuary in Tasmania, described their relationship as being 'love at first sight'. Irons added that their relationship was 'extremely unique' as birds tended to be ambivalent at best towards each other when they belonged to different subspecies. But the pair, which were unable to forge relationships with other animals, have managed to strike up an unlikely friendship and now they rarely spend time apart. #birds #Australia #Australianbirds #lorikeet #cockatoo

Authorities in Indonesia have issued a tsunami alert after a volcano erupted several times in the province of North Sulawesi, spewing a column of smoke more than a mile into the sky and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people from their homes. Mount Ruang, a stratovolcano, first erupted at 9.45pm local time on Tuesday and then four times on Wednesday, Indonesia’s volcanology agency said. “Based on the result of visual and instrumental observation that showed an increase in volcanic activity, Mount Ruang’s level was raised from level three to level four,” Hendra Gunawan, the head of Indonesia’s volcanology agency, said in a statement. Almost 190,000 households are stuck on social housing wait lists amid Australia’s housing crisis, according to Guardian Australia analysis of state and territory data. Some states have seen declines in the number of outstanding social housing applications over the past couple of years. But at a national level, applications have increased since June 2022, when there were almost 175,000 applications, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Guardian Australia estimated the current wait list at almost 190,000 by combining publicly available data from state and territory governments, and requesting data from those states don’t publish. The exact number is hard to pin down due to differing reporting periods, definitions and systems across the country. Chart by Josh Nicholas. Why are Iran and Israel attacking each other? Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel on Saturday night, in the Islamic Republic’s first ever direct attack on the Jewish state, bringing a years-long shadow war into the open and threatening to draw the region into a broader conflagration. Israel, with the help of key western allies including the US, UK and Jordan, claimed to have intercepted some 99% of the launches during the mass strike, but added that some ballistic missiles had reached Israel. So, why is it making everyone so on edge? Reporter Matilda Boseley explains. 📸: Getty Images/EPA/AFP/Reuters #Iran #Israel #IsraelGazawar #nuclearweapons
