TRUTH: Motivating your teen requires encouragement not enforcing expectations. Expectation ➡️ a belief that someone will or SHOULD achieve something. SHOULD ➡️ a belief or desired outcome held by you, important to you. ➡️ used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness, typically when CRITICIZING someone’s actions. How do you feel when someone tries to force their beliefs of how you ‘should’ live your life on you? Do you feel criticized at the same time? Your first reaction is likely defensiveness!!! Even if their way might be right or better.... Screw you! This is EXACTLY how your teen feels 👉👉 unheard, misunderstood and criticized so it’s not surprising they aren’t motivated by your words.
