This is the first full-size three-dimensional scan of the Titanic ship. One analyst said the scan could be a “game-changer” in understanding the disaster. An estimated 1,500 people were killed when the Titanic, at the time the world’s largest ocean liner, struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic during its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York on April 15, 1912. Magellan Ltd and Atlantic Productions took 700,000 images from every angle to create a 3D reconstruction. Historians are aware that microbes in the sea are eating away at the ship and time is running out. But the scan now freezes the wreck in time. The wreckage of the Titanic was discovered in 1985, sitting 4,000m beneath the Atlantic Ocean’s surface, south of Newfoundland, Canada.
