This is a common household arthropod that Iām sure many of you can relate to seeing in your homes. I typically find House Centipedes (Scutigera coleoptrata) in my bathroom and basement from time to time. I hear a lot about people killing these guys when they see them, mostly out of fear. These myriapods are actually quite beneficial to have living in your homes! These centipedes feed on a variety of common household insects and other arthropods that are typically found in peopleās houses. Using their long skinny legs, these centipedes scurry across the floors in search of prey. These centipedes rely heavily on their super long sensitive antennas to detect vibrations. When catching prey, these centipedes grip their prey item using their sharp piercing appendages called forcipules to deliver an injection of venom to paralyze their victims! *Hand drawn stickers added to my storeās website for purchase via link in bio! ā£ Please subscribe to my YouTube channel if you havenāt already by clicking the Instagram icon in my bio! The Thread-Waisted Wasp (Ammophila procera) has such a tiny waist that many people could only dream of having! These wasps can be found throughout the U.S, Southern Canada, and Mexico. You may notice the rather large and sharp mandibles that this wasp is equipped with. During mating, the males of this species will latch onto the back of the femaleās head while holding onto her body with his long slender legs. This particular one that Iām holding is a female. The females on the other hand use their large mandibles in a much different manner. After mating, female Thread-Waisted Wasps begin to dig out a burrow in moist sandy-like soil. After that, they fly out in search of a caterpillar. Once a female comes in contact with one, the female wasp begins to sting the caterpillar. The venomous sting doesnāt kill the caterpillar, but instead completely paralyzes the caterpillarās body! The female then flies the paralyzed caterpillar back to her underground burrow using her large mandibles to hold it. Once underground, the female lays a single egg on the caterpillar. Within about 2 days, the egg hatches and the tiny Thread-Waisted Wasp larva immediately begins to feast on the paralyzed caterpillar. Within about 5 days, the larva will have consumed nearly the entire body of the caterpillar. After nearly eating the whole of its victim, the larva then pupates and eventually emerges out of its burrow as an adult wasp! *Hand drawn stickers added to my storeās website for purchase via link in bio! ā£ Pleases subscribe to my YouTube channel if vor cies is haven't already by clicking the rocera, Instagram icon in my bio! *Reuploded since the first video got taken down* Just uploaded a brand new video to my YouTube channel showcasing and giving out information about this magnificent female Southern Black Widow (Latrodectus mactans), all while handling her in my hands! š·ļøāļøClick the Instagram icon in my bio to be directed toy YouTube Channel. Or, simply search my channel name: Kelvinwiley. Please Subscribe :) ā£ā£ ā£ā£ Thereās a total of 34 different species of true widow spiders that have been described by science. True widows are widow spiders found only within the genus Latrodectus. Within this fascinating genus of spiders can you find iconic species such as the Northern Black Widow (L. various), Western Black Widow (L. hesperus), and Southern Black Widow (L. mactans). The females of those three species sport an all jet black sleek body coloration with a bright red hourglass on the underside of their abdomens. Widow spiders have gained a reputation for the potency of their venom. With some species possessing venom about 15 times stronger than those of rattlesnakes, their venom packs quite the punch. However, rattlesnakes inject a much larger dosage of venom than these small-bodied spiders, making them far more lethal than any species of true widow spider. A death from a true widow spider envenomation is extremely rare in humans. Common symptoms associated with a bite from these spiders include headaches, nausea, muscle spasms, muscle cramps, localized swelling, and redness. Young children and the elderly are typically higher at risk of developing more severe symptoms if envenomated. People who have an allergic reaction to the venom are also at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms as well. Despite all of the things that youāve just read, and things that you may have heard about these infamous spiders, true widow spiders are generally very docile and are not set out to bite people. Bites from a true widow usually take place when the spider feels trapped and senses that it canāt escape. *Hand drawn stickers added to my storeās website for purchase via link in bio!*ā£ā£ā£ā£ā£ā£ ā£ #Jesus #God #latrodectusmactans #entomology #latrodectus #spiders #blackwidow #insects #invertebrates #arthropods #mothsofinstagram #theridiidae #bugs #arachnids #arthropods #venomous #tarantulas #tarantulasofinstagramā£ā£

Itās not every day that I get to film two organisms mating on my body. But when I do, I try to make sure I capture it in great detail! Originally from Asia, the Asian Lady Beetle (Harmonia axyridis) has made its home to four other continents. This particular species was introduced for biological control to help reduce potential pest insects from getting out of hand. Lady beetles, ladybirds, or by some like to call them, lady bugs, are great predators of aphids. Both the larvae and adults of lady beetles are predatory. Moving into the second part of the video, I was able to get up close and extremely personal on two European Mantises (Mantis religiosa) in the process of mating. Itās more common for mantises to mate during the night. This is because female mantises will release pheromones in hopes that nearby males will pick them up. During the day however, male mantises have a good chance at finding females since they can see them. By connecting the tip of his abdomen with hers, the male begins to pump semen, thus fertilizing her! Towards the very end of the video, youāll see a nearby female who just happened to be very pregnant. The newly inseminated femaleās abdomen will slowly grow plump, just like the already pregnant femaleās abdomen. *Hand drawn stickers added to my storeās website for purchase via link in bio!
