I spent a really long time thinking that I was the problem. Diminishing myself. Playing down my opinions, thoughts or feelings. Trying to make other people happy at the expense of my own. I stopped myself from dancing when music played. I stopped myself from crying when I was moved. I stopped myself from laughing for fear of looking stupid. I stopped myself from sharing my truth because of what others might think. In the process I convinced myself that I needed to be different to belong. And yet, I didn’t feel like I belong in my own life. Then Brené Brown said this “Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” And Glennon Doyle said this “You will be too much for some people, those aren’t your people”. Slowly, I decided to be the girl who said things like “it would be so fun to just dance in the rain”. The ones who wanted to stay, stayed. The ones who didn’t, left. And the ones that I felt I had been looking for my whole life, seemed to find me. So, we danced. Yes, I share my life on the internet and that’s how I found these women. But I have found true belonging personal life too, just by being me.
