April is SA Awareness Month. #traumatok One of the least acknowledged symptoms of trauma is risky behavior. Many are confused about this symptom that is well studied in psychiatry because they cannot comprehend why someone who has survived trauma would seek out risky behaviors where they could potentially be retraumatized. 🤔 This is why survivors of SA end up in situations where they are repeatedly assaulted and researchers believe that these individuals seek out a false sense of control by “living on the edge” and potentially narrowly escaping trauma. Re-enacting the trauma by engaging in risky situations and then surviving the risky situations fools the person in to thinking that they somehow have control and are somehow undoing the trauma. 😢 The problem is that sometimes the individual actually gets harmed again and this further leads the person to seek out another dangerous situation thinking that they can try to take control again. ❤️🩹 Disclaimer: You may want to consider your individual mental health needs with a licensed medical professional.
