I take kid life jacket (PFD) buying seriously- let me share what I’ve learned. 🌊🌊🌊 Not all infant and youth PFDs are created equal and in fact many can be dangerous. Our kids did Infant Swim Rescue since they were babies and our ISR instructor always taught us was about using safe PFDs… when they were infants she recommended the Stohlquist Infant Life Jacket and from that day on, each weight range we reached, I did my research. MUST HAVES: US Coast Guard Approved - link below that goes over the different types Bright colors easily spotted in water. Red, Yellow, Orange are great. Sized for correct weight range. Fits correctly so an infant or kid can’t slip out- the more adjustable straps there are the easier it is to fit properly. Grab Handle- even some of the best PFDs don’t have grab handles, but I wouldn’t go without one. Groin strap for infant PFD An infant PFD that floats the infant onto their back and supports the head. Many non approved PFDs can flip infant and children to their stomachs which is so dangerous. Elliot out grew his Stohlquist “Fit Kid” PFD this winter. It was time to invest in a”big kid” PFD. I researched and went with the Astral Otter 2.0. It met all of our requirements with an USCG Type III approval, a Design Buoyancy of 11.5 lbs, fits youth 50-90 lbs, but also was one of the only good ones in this weight range that had a grab handle! This isn’t an ad or part of a content exchange, it was something we needed and I got to it. I kept an eye out for sales this spring and went for it when a 20% off coupon for this PFD came my way. We’ve used it a few times since, Elliot loves it and Emi and Teddy love their Stohlquist hand me downs. And yes, im assre I’m not wesrinf a PFD. There are some situations we feel its okay for strong seimmers not to wesr one. Helmets tho. We always wesr helmets just like the kids biking & skiing.
