There is a misconception about self-harm as many believe that since Iām not doing what the therapist, psychologists, and psychiatrist label self-harm, Iām not harming myself. And this is a flat-out lie! Self-harm isnāt always what you think it is, and many of you are in a constant cycle of it yet donāt realize it. Here are some examples: Neglecting Physical Health: Skipping meals, not sleeping enough, avoiding medical checkups, etc., can all be signs of self-harm that arise due to trauma. Emotional Isolation: Pulling away from friends and family, avoiding social situations, or isolating oneself emotionally can be a subconscious form of self-harm. Overworking: Keeping busy can be a way to avoid dealing with traumaāhowever, overworking leads to burnout, stress, and physical health issues. Substance Misuse: Using alcohol, drugs, or other substances to cope with feelings or memories related to the trauma can cause significant harm. Self-Punishment: This can manifest in many ways, including self-deprecation, blaming oneself for things beyond control, or even physically harming oneself. Engaging in Risky Behaviors: This can include reckless driving, unsafe sex, or other high-risk activities. Neglecting Personal Hygiene: A lack of interest or energy to care for personal cleanliness or appearance can be a form of self-harm. Ignoring Personal Boundaries: This can be continuously saying āyesā when you mean āno,ā not advocating for your own needs, or letting others overstep your boundaries. Harmful Inner Dialogue: Constantly criticizing or belittling oneself in oneās thoughts can signify unaddressed trauma. Not Seeking Help: Denying that thereās a problem, resisting therapy or counseling, or not reaching out when things are tough can be a form of self-harm. If you find yourself in these cycles you are self-harming. But you can dig yourself out!
