With over 1,000 plague victims so far and less than half of the graves excavated, this may be the largest mass plague grave ever discovered in Europe. The black plague ravaged Nuremberg between 1533 and 1634 taking thousands of lives and forcing those who remained to bury their loved ones in large pits because the cemeteries were too full. This devestation of the population was so complete that it changed our genes forever. #fyp #archaeology #ancienthistory #history #historytok #blackplague #plague #archaeologytiktok #longform #longformcontent #education #liminalitytv

The oldest stone tools ever found in Europe have been dated to 1.4 MILLION years ago! This is an important find because it bridges the gap between the 1.8 million year old dates we have in the Caucasus, and the 1.2 million year old dates we have in Western Europe. It shows that the most likely route our ancestors took into Europe was from east to west. I actually think this is kind of surprising given how short of a sea journey it would have been from Morocco into Spain, but it points to a possible lack of sea faring skill in the ancient past. #homoerectus #neanderthal #denisovan #ukraine #paleoanthropology #archaeology #ancienthistory #history #liminalitytv #longform #longformcontent #education #science #nature #historytok #archaeologytiktok

This 2,100 year old enigmatic bronze hand was discovered with the longest and oldest Vasconic inscription ever found. We know very little about Vascones. We know they lived in northern Spain, but we don’t know exactly when they arrived there or where they came from. We think that they are the ancestors of the Basques, but since barely any of their writing has ever been found, and their language is as-yet unknown, that’s about all we know. I actually find not knowing really exciting when it comes to archaeology. Not knowing something lights a fire inside me and it gets me excited in ways that I really don’t about much else. Sure, it’s nice to know how things happened, or how they work, but it’s the process of figuring it out, or how others figured it out that really interests me. Since this is just the beginning of figuring out the Vascones story, this is one of the most exciting areas of archaeology for me! #bronze #basque #linguistics #archaeology #ancienthistory #history #spain #hispania #liminalitytv #spanish #vascones #longform #longformcontent #education #science

Tutankhamun’s dagger came from outer space! No, really. The dagger has a nickel, iron and cobalt mixture typical of meteors. It is believed to have landed somewhere in Mesopotamia where it was turned into a dagger; iron working this sophisticated still had not arrived in Egypt at this time. I love this artefact, and it was incredible to see in person! #tutankhamun #ancientegypt #ancienthistory #mesopotamia #ancient #archaeology #liminalitytv #egyptology #longform #longformcontent #history

We almost went extinct. 930,000 years ago something happened that brought our ancestors to the brink of extinction. For over 100,000 years only 1,300 of them managed to survive, before ultimately expanding again about 830,000 years ago. We have no idea what caused this incredibly close call, but the findings from this genetic study also line up with the relative abscence of human ancestors in the fossil record during this period. What do you think could have caused this brush with extinction? Candidates include climate change and subsequent resource scarcity and disease, but there is no solid proof either way. I just keep going back to the visual of 1,300 people. Its so few. If you live in a city you likely pass by more people than that everyday.
