I finally went wine tasting in Michigan…and I have thoughts. #puremichiganpartner While it is true, wine is now being made in all 50 of the United States, #puremichigan has had a pretty big head start. The first AVAs in the state were actually established in the early 1980’s and today you can find over 50 different grape varieties ranging from Vinifera varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to hybrid varieties like Chambourcin. And though wine is made all over the state, I opted to visit the Lake Michigan Shore AVA in the southwest corner and where the majority of the state’s grapes are grown. There’s a ton to do and see here and I loved staying in New Buffalo which is the cutest little beach town on Lake Michigan that is just 20-30 minutes from the majority of the vineyards and wineries in the AVA. That said, the AVA is quite large and there are a few gems a little further out like Modales in Fennville.  I have to admit, I didn’t know what to expect when tasting wine here but it’s clear after spending time with winemakers like Max and Sydney at Stranger Wine Co., there’s something really exciting happening here on the wine front.
