Welcome newest special needs babies🩷🥰 When we received the intake request with these videos, we could not say no🩷 All 5 of these kittens have hind leg abnormalities. This is not Swimmer’s Syndrome, nor twisted legs. We are not exactly sure what’s going on yet, but they all appear to have orthopedic and/or connective tissue issues in their hind legs. They all have the same presentation., which is unusual. Repost from @Pei 🙋🏻‍♀️ Kitten Rescuer 🐱 : Fiyero Update! ❤️ We saw Dr. O’Neill and the amazing @MASH  team yesterday for a neurology consult. He confirmed Fiyero suffered a complete brachial plexus avulsion/injury. 🥺 I am so grateful for his patience in explaining what this means. 🙏🏼 🤓 Unlike human arms, cat forelimbs are attached to the shoulder by free-floating clavicle bones and muscle - this is what allows them to squeeze through tiny spaces as long as they can fit their head. The brachial plexus is a large network of nerves located in the chest and armpit area that are responsible for controlling movement, feeling, and general function of the forelimb. In a complete brachial plexus avulsion/injury, like in Fiyero’s, the nerve roots in the neck region are torn away from the spinal cord and the nerves located in the armpit are stretched or torn. This means he has no feeling in his right arm and no control of movement. An injury like this is usually a result from a VERY hard pull on his arm or high impact trauma. 🥺 There is also some muscle atrophy already, indicating the injury occurred 7+ days ago (longer than we originally thought). Next steps! 💪🏼 The agreed upon plan for now, is to give Fiyero a few weeks to see if we see ANY positive change (though highly unlikely). If no change, then we will most likely amputate to avoid any damage from dragging or self-mutilation. I will be watching him closely to make sure this does not happen in the meantime as well. ❤️‍🩹 Regardless of what happens, Fiyero will have the best, fullest life and will not be held back! He is already the loviest, happy-as-a-clam, snuggliest boy. Thank you everyone for all your well wishes 🙏🏼❤️, they mean so much 🥹! Repost from @thekittensfoster : Lucy’s appointment today was to check her to see if there were any signs of pneumonia left in her lungs. The vet did x-rays and it came back showing that she still has traces of pneumonia in her lungs, so she was prescribed an additional 10 day course of antibiotics, and we’ll have a re-check appointment once she’s done with her antibiotics to make sure the infection is fully cleared. The x-rays also showed that Lucy’s heart is healthy and there are no signs of her having megaesophagus. Heart conditions and megaesophagus can both cause growth to be stunted, so we wanted to rule those out. We are suspicious that Lucy might have hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain), which can also stunt growth. We have a neurology appointment @MASH  on Thursday with Dr. O’Neil to have her checked for that. Everyone at the vet today was obsessed with Lucy and Lucy was such a good girl. I’m amazed at how strong she is despite her condition. I expect her condition to improve more and more as the days go on with her being on more antibiotics. Repost from @thekittensfoster : Lucy update! I want to assure everyone that Lucy is doing well and this is just what pneumonia looks like and sounds like. Her breathing and condition overall have improved drastically since I got her last week. Her breathing is still labored, but pneumonia takes a while to clear out. Most of the time, Lucy is in the incubator with oxygen support, but I give her 30 minute visitations with her brothers a few times a day because it’s good for her mental health. She also has more energy and is awake for longer periods of time, so during those awake hours, I want her to be happy, and being with her brothers is the most important thing for her happiness. I promise that Lucy is receiving the best possible care and she is improving every day. Overall, Lucy is in good spirits. She is active and alert while awake, she loves to play and purr, and she loves eating. These are all clinical signs that she is doing well, despite having difficulty breathing. She is on another round of antibiotics to help clear out the pneumonia and we will have her lungs re-checked in another 10 days. Repost by @thekittensfoster : Lucy update! 🩷 I am seeing a remarkable difference in Lucy today versus yesterday. Not only is she using the litter box on her own now, but she’s more bright eyed, alert, and awake for longer periods. Lucy is 5 weeks old and typically at this age they are able to use the litter box on their own and start eating on their own. I think Lucy had just been so tired from the pneumonia that she didn’t have to energy to go and potty, so I had been stimulating her to potty. It’s a great sign that she can go on her own now! I’m still syringe feeding her small amounts of gruel (blended wet food) every 3 hours (including overnight), but I think she may be able to eat on her own in the near future. 🤞She’s also gaining weight! 💪 Lucy still sleeps a lot, but she is having longer and more energized periods of awake time than she had previously, so I’m feeling more confident about her recovery. She will remain in the incubator and on oxygen for a few more days while the antibiotics continue to clear her infection. The goal is to get her well enough so she can be reunited with her brothers. I’m taking it day by day, but today was a huge milestone. 👏 We’re not out of the woods yet with Lucy, but I want to celebrate these wins because they’re great signs she is recovering. ❤️‍🩹Lucy has an appointment @MASH , which will be the beginning of our quest to find out why Lucy is so smol and what we can do to get her the best care possible and thrive.
