Rough play… I love it. I love getting on a dogs level and letting them bite and get some energy out. I love being able to get rough with them and let them get right with me. I love the bond it can help create and strengthen. Dogs are naturally playful animals and getting rough with them can be a lot of fun. BUT… there are rules. 1. I start play. I NEVER entertain rough play initiated by the dog. 2. I end play. I NEVER continue play if I’ve stopped and the dog persists. 3. I incorporate obedience training into play. Sit stays, down stays, drop it and leave it. 4. No gloves, no play. And before play starts and those rules are able to be enforced, I make sure that this type of play is appropriate for the dog! I will not play rough with a dog: 1. Who has aggressive tendencies. 2. Is nervous and afraid or seems uncomfortable or in pain. 3. It’s important to focus on and reward good/wanted behavior. Behaviors that are rewarded are more likely to continue 💯 It’s easy to get caught up in paying attention to and correcting “bad” or unwanted behaviors. Ut don’t let your training become one sided 👎🏽 I always encourage my clients to focus on and pay attention to what they want from their dogs. 🙌🏽 90% of training should focus on what you want, even if you had to lead with corrections, overlay them with rewards for what you want. You can’t throw treats at everything. Some dogs are just born fighters with a tenacious personality. It’s who they are. And if you are not ready to handle them accordingly and be more confident, persistent and firm than they are, you will have problems. As easy as it is to put dogs in a box based on their breed, I can tell you first hand that while there are breed tendencies, it boils down to the personality of each individual dog. I’ve met golden retrievers that were intense and aggressive as young puppies and Belgian Malinois that were calm, gentle and harmless from the day they were born. It’s not my intention to take away from the work that needs to be put in when training your dog to do anything, and admittedly, this video is definitely an oversimplification of a sit stay. But that’s the point —it’s simple when you break it down to the core points being made for your dog. 1. Stay in the sit get rewarded. 2. Get up from the sit and I immediately stop you and put you back in position and we try again. If you can remember this simple approach while being calm and patient with your dog in training, you’ll be able to make more progress with your dog than you ever have before. Perfect example of what NOT to do. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but 👇🏽 🗣️ YOUR DOG DOES NOT NEED TO MEET OTHER DOGS. 🗣️ THEY WILL BE JUST FINE WITHOUT THE INTERACTION 🗣️ ITS OKAY TO SAY NO 🗣️ MOST PEOPLE DONT KNOW SH#T ABOUT THEIR DOGS BEHAVIOR 🗣️ “FRIENDLY” WELL-INTENDED PUSHY/OVER EXCITED DOGS CAUSE FIGHTS And for the record, that dog WAS NOT friendly, he was a bully and trying to DOMINATE the other dog.
