Tapestry art piece for the College of New Caledonia lobby unveiled in May. I recently passed through Prince George and had a chance to see it in person! Design Logic Interiors and CNC commissioned me to make this art piece for their theme: the region's 4 seasons, land & nature connection, the Indigenous people and communities surrounding Northern BC, & student journey/community. Based on consultation with local Dakelh Elders, hearing their stories of growing up on the land, the love for their traditional territory and culture, I was inspired to create this multi media tapestry. Their stories reminded me of my Elders and our stories and that Indigenous people had everything we needed to survive from the land and water before our way of life changed. The tapestry features the Prince George landscape and aspects important to traditional Dakelh way of life. Created with fabric, beaver fur, sealskin, moose hide, seal leather, beads, swarovski crystals, sequins, abalone shells to create the rolling hills, northern lights, river, salmon, caribou and soapberry bushes. Edged in moosehide and beaver to signify the fur trade era that permanently changed Dakelh way of life. I incorporated triangle geometric shapes seen in Inuit/Inuvialuit seal tapestries. The bold rainbow sealskin pattern is my signature style but also a traditional color scheme for Dakelh. True to my value of supporting and uplifting Indigenous Artists, I commissioned pieces to include in my tapestry: 2 beaded caribou on moosehide: @ArcticOceanMocs Beaded caribou bust on home tanned caribou hide: Brenda Lee Asp Caribou hair tufted red soapberries: Suzan Marie @@sprucerootweaver Beaded home tanned fish leather salmon: Teresa Vander Meer-Chassé More details to come! #Art #FineArt #IndigenousArt #IndigenousArtist #InuitArtist #InuvialuitArtist #CanadianArtist #Tapestry #Fur #Moosehide #Abalone #Tufting #Beadwork #NorthernLights #CNC #PrinceGeorgeBC #LheidliTenneh #Dakelh #Inuvialuit #Gwichin #Taalrumiq
