Look, if you do these things, you do you but it’s not what I would recommend.  Cooking all your pets meals will almost certainly leave them nutritionally deficient. Even if you follow a recipe. And no, ‘rotating proteins’ or other ingredients will not help.  Yes, we cook for ourselves and our families but we are not very good at it! It is HARD to create healthy, balanced diets and nutritional disease in humans is extremely common, especially obesity.  And our pets have unique needs, particularly during growth, especially for larger breed dogs, not to mention in their senior years or if they have a chronic illness.  Regardless of the type of food you want to choose, it is always best to opt for a commercially prepared option created by expert nutritionists. ‘Never’ taking your pet to the vet is not something to be proud of. Animals are extremely good at living with diseases and not showing any obvious signs.  Please have them checked by your veterinary team at least annually, which is the equivalent of you only going to the doctors every 5 years at least!  Not using preventative treatment is a choice you can make if you wish but we don’t recommend them for fun! All vet professionals have seen pets suffer, and even die, from preventable conditions and we desperately want to avoid that for our patients and your pets.  Remember though to thank all those owners who do vaccinate and treat their animals. The herd immunity they create is what is keeping your pet safe.  Walking off lead near roads. Yes I know it looks cool and your dog is very obedient but this isn’t the time to show off. Keep your ego in check and keep them safe.  Letting children crawl all over them. Most of the time the dog isn’t happy about this and is tolerating the kid only. One day, they might snap, a child is mauled and they are put to sleep.  It did not ‘come out of nowhere’, their distress was ignored and they were left with no choice but to express themselves more clearly. #notaflex #flex #petadvice #homecookingfordogs #homecookeddogfood #homemadedogfood #catthevet

#stitch with @Morgan Lau Bailey Firstly, I am so sorry for your loss. The grief of losing a pet is very real and I hope you are ok. Our dogs are living longer lives and many of us are lucky enough to have a super-senior in our families!  But when they are old, our pets do need a great deal of care and attention and their needs are different to when they were younger.  So here are some of my top care tips for the goldie oldie in your life!  1)       Keep up a close relationship with your vet  It is a very lucky doggo indeed who isn’t dealing with some sort of chronic health condition when they are older but with good medication and monitoring they still live their best lives! So it is really important you take them for regular check-ups and work closely with your vet to ensure they stay healthy and happy for as long as possible!  Many people avoid their practice when their pets get old because they are worried we are going to say it is time to say goodbye. This happens very rarely but when it does, it is often because they didn’t come in soon enough. I understand the fear but please know we are here to support you.  2)       Make their lives easy!  Do ensure that they have easy and unfettered everything they need in your home and we are not making their lives harder by having food and water bowls a long way from their beds, or making them walk long distances on slippy floors to get around.  Ramps are also a great idea and can have a huge impact on preventing repetitive strain injuries. They can be used in the home, garden and the ones for cars are brilliant.  And don’t forget to keep pathways clear! So they don’t trip over things or struggle to get about with weak legs and poor eyesight.  3)       Still take them for walks!  Their bodies may be letting them down but their minds are still active and getting out and about will be hugely mentally stimulating and rewarding for them.  A slow, sniffy walk is just perfect. Vary where you go, so they have new smells and doggy gossip to check out!  4)       A good diet will pay dividends  There are no set guidelines for senior pet diets because their needs are so variable but finding the perfect food will have a massively positive impact on their health.  So many chronic illnesses can be supported by the right meals, things like kidney issues, liver problems, arthritis and dementia to name just a few, but even general health will be hugely impacted and improved by the right diet.  Have a chat to your vet team about what they would advise for your pet.  5)       Supplements!  Supplements can be helpful, but not always necessary if the diet is right, but the regulation of them is very poor and plenty of companies make impossible promises.  Again, the people to chat to about the best ones to chose, in terms of quality, effectiveness and suitability for your dogs individual needs, is your veterinary team.  Keep the stiches coming! I am loving seeing your super old and super loved dogs!  #olddog #elderlypets #seniorcare #seniordog #catthevet

#duet with @Sarah Morgan I know this dog is loved and this video was just for entertainment and this is absolutely no criticism of them as owners but I am delighted so many of the comments are discussing how breathing like this in these breeds is a red flag. The messages really do seem to be getting through which is wonderful and can only be a positive thing for our flat faced dogs and their issues. Not long ago there would have been wall-to-wall ‘how cute’ comments and any concerns would have been shouted down. We should love and care for these dogs but we shouldn’t be blind to their struggles and we must demand better breeding and longer noses for them. Because only then will they be able to live lives free of struggle. And please, if you do comment on their video, keep it kind and constructive. #pug #pugsoftiktok #pugtok #catthevet #breedtobreathe

What do Cockerpoos, Cavapoos, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Miniature Dachsunds and Pugs have in common?! They are the top five dog breeds that needed to see the vet at Easter last year because of stealing and eating chocolate, according to claims data from @Petplan UK. But they aren't the only ones, Pet Plan had nearly 2500 claims for naughty dogs getting into the Easter Eggs last year! But like most things, prevention is always better than cure! (And nobody wants to find the dog ate their Easter Egg!) So my top two pieces of advice are: Make sure the eggs are not only hidden but are also out of reach of the dog, as they will be able to sniff them even if they can't see them and they won't be at all ashamed to help themselves! If you are planning an Easter Egg hunt, keep your dog securely away from the garden until it is all over, and make sure you count the eggs out and back in again I hope you all have a fabulous break with your families and your pets, full of chocolate and with a distinct lack of any emergency trips to the vets! #ad #PetplanAdvice #petplan #easterandpets #chocolate #eastereggs #vetadvice #happyeaster #catthevet
