Babies’ and toddlers’ brains begin to anticipate what comes next as they get to know these verbal routines. Don’t forget the PAUSE! When we pause unexpectedly before a sound or a word in a familiar song, we give a child the chance to respond in some way. It may just be wiggling with excitement, smiling, or making a vowel sound. Make sure to pause 5 to 7 seconds at least to give your child plenty of time! If they don’t do anything, then YOU fill in the blank- remember, you have many more opportunities to practice this! As your child’s skills grow, they will likely begin to fill in using something resembling the sound or word that comes next! Other verbal routines are things like: “Ready, set, go!” “1-2-3!” “Up and down” during movement play… Does this all sound familiar?
