The microorganism living attached to this aquarium moss is a protozoan ciliate called Vorticella. . Vorticella is a eukaryotic unicellular microorganism. It forms a stalk that attaches to the substrate (in this case the moss) and feeds by using cilia that sweep bacteria and other small microorganisms suspended in water. . Before making this video, I kept this aquarium moss jar unopened in my house for around 4 months. Vorticella eats bacteria so Vorticella likely contributed to avoiding an over proliferation of bacteria in the aquarium moss jar. . I love how this microorganism seemed to be playing peek-a-boo with me as I was recording the video! . For this video I used an Olympus CX31 microscope at up to 600x magnification #microscopy #microscope #microorganisms #protozoa #aquariummoss #moss #vorticella #ecology #drbioforever
