All important things about this cannot be said in one video. A few extra thoughts: Language is a very big issue here. Lots of words are conversation stoppers. Word choices are reasons for dismissing a person’s opinion. “Conflict,” “genocide,” “apartheid,” “open-air prison,” “war crimes,” “crimes against humanity,” “kill,” “die.” People have different understandings and definitions of some of these words. Different definitions lead to lots of misunderstandings and bickering. In reality people have more in common than they think. Genocide: I expect someone will comment: “What’s ‘nuanced’ about genocide!?” or something like that. The word genocide has many issues: academics, activists, legal experts, frequently use different definitions of the word. People often end up debating about definitions more than talking about what is happening. The UN definition is not without its problems. And scholars are not unanimous on whether this is a genocide according to the UN definition, with some saying intent is difficult to prove (in general) and in this case too. Some historians avoid the word altogether, as it is overused, applied unevenly, and heavily politicized. Whatever you call it (war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, mass killing, or genocide) it has to stop! I don’t have solutions. I’m not Palestinian or an Israeli (nor am I Jewish or Muslim). I’m also not a journalist. I’m a historian. And one who should be doing his master’s thesis. I honestly don’t have the time to read and watch nearly enough about Israel/Palestine, even though I want to! It’s impossible to say anything (or nothing) about this without angering someone.
