Some more work with my fear reactive client. The notion that horses who are scared & “dangerous” need to be bucked out or forced to work through their escape behaviours in order to fix them is one that was created by people with a lack of understanding of behavioural science. It is dangerous and irresponsible to intentionally try to get an animal to engaged in unwanted behaviours that you’re looking to eradicate in order to fix them. Mistakes happen but deliberately putting an animal above threshold so that they appear dangerous is a sign of poor training. When sourcing people to train your animals, don’t be fooled by “exciting” and dramatic videos of explosive horses who they manage to “tame” afterwards. Such videos are indicators of the trainer relying on learned helplessness aka shutdown in order to get a gagged response from the horse. This essentially creates a ticking time bomb where the horse may or may not one day be sent enough above threshold that they react explosively because their fear has never actually been dealt with, the response has just been suppressed.
