Convinced my wife to cancel hotel reservations to spend 4 days on Tokashiki Island, Okinawa for the kids spring break. It was absolutely epic, but I'm not gonna lie, we were ready to come home afterwards. Turns out sharing a small space with 3 children can lead to sleep deprivation. The closest I've ever come to time travel, this was quite possibly my favorite off the grid experience in Japan so far. The remains of an island fishing village that was once home to men, women, and children long since summoned by the city to a newer, faster life. Do they look back fondly on their time on the island? Why did they leave? Do they ever dream of going back? Some are no doubt grown, some departed...but their memories and experiences still linger like second-hand smoke within the decaying walls of the houses they left behind. Books, blankets, coats, receipts, hand-written notes, used dishware with food remains suggest a hasty departure. For now, we inhabit this space as they once did, forming memories of our own as adventure-seeking vagrants with lives and obligations that will soon issue us the same call to depart this quiet paradise. This was the most challenging treasure hunt I've done so far!
