But also donāt freak out! š info in caption š Thought Iād repost this older video as itās one of my FAQ. Check out the š on my profile to find Just Rite safety can on Amazon. Do you have any stories of artists accidentally setting a fire? Itās hasnāt happened to me so far (āšŖµ). The last thing I want to do is put people off oil painting. It has a bad wrap amongst other types of paint for being toxic/unsafe but this isnāt necessarily true - it can be perfectly safe with a little education about materials. Consider this my awareness campaign to educate u of the worst case scenario so u can easily avoid it. So since oily rags & paper towels (particularly those soaked in oil medium from cleaning spills or oiling-out your painting) can generate heat as they dry, simply follow the advice below & youāll avoid any spontaneous fires!! AVOID OILING-OUT this is when artists apply a layer of oil over their finished painting to give it an even sheen before varnishing. Itās good to avoid oiling out generally as it can darken or yellow your painting over time. Instead avoid sinking (aka matte areas) by using enough oil medium in the moment. If u do, only oil-out specific areas & use a brush that can be washed easier than a rag. ALWAYS DRY RAGS FLAT heat builds in the folds as the oil dries. By drying your rag flat on a floor or table or hanging them on a drying rack of some kind you prevent that happening. HAVE A FIRE SAFE GARBAGE CAN it doesnāt have to be a proper shop can like a Just Rite safety can - any sealable metal can works - I used to use a big cookie tin! šŖ ADD WATER if youāre nervous about a particularly oily rag add a little water into the metal can to minimize risk even further. USE HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE the waste you generate from oil painting should be disposed off in household hazardous waste. Youāll have to google how this works in your area, sometimes they pick up from your door or sometimes there are dedicated drop of sites/times. HAVE A FIRE-EXTINGUISHER this is advice for anywhere but remember when youāre furnishing a studio to have one on site. Ps. Just talking about fire safety I canāt help but think about all those impacted by the wildfires this season here in Canada & all over the world š. Check out canadahelps.org for a list of charities you can donate to to help those who need it. #studiosafety #oilpainting #oilpaintingsafety #oilpaintingtips #dorisrose #dorisrosetips #oilyrag #oilpaintingrag #oilpaintingadvice #howtooilpaint #oilpaintingforbeginners #paintingathome #artstudio #pintongstudio #oilpaintingtutorial
